Before 1990, going abroad to study was considered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. However, by 2024 every second person is either completing their studies from a top-notch university abroad or planning to do so. As of August 2024, more than 13.35 lakh students are studying in different countries from India as per the Ministry of External Affairs report.

Why are Indian students allured to study abroad?

There are countless reasons behind this shift: they get global exposure, experience different cultures by interacting with diverse nationalities, and get better career prospects. This new experience enriches students' educational experience and prepares them for a competitive global job market. In quiddity, these study abroad programs are a portal to broadening horizons, building lifelong connections, and shaping a well-rounded and globally-minded individual who can thrive in any profession.

Now, the question arises: as various countries offer their best student programs, how do they choose the programs and countries that provide students with a better living environment, cost-effective courses, and greater career opportunities? For many years, the UK and the USA were the primary choices for students to pursue their dream of higher education. Still, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, France, and Spain are also attracting students from various countries. The number of internationally mobile students has significantly increased over the last 20 years. As per the data collected by UNESCO, the student migration number over the previous 10 years had surged to more than 3.8 million and reached 6 million in 2021, almost three times in the last 20 years.

China is at the top of the list from where more than 1.2 million students are moving abroad, following India, which is sending 1 million students to abroad studies programs. However, students are also moving from Vietnam, Germany, and Uzbekistan but only 0.1 million as per the latest data of 2024. Notably, The course of interest has also changed among Indian students in the last few years, students were predominantly leaning towards STEM disciplines such as engineering, computer science, and medicine, while pursuing their higher education studies. However, a noticeable change is underway as a rising number of students are showing keen interest in non-STEM programs such as liberal arts, development studies, culinary arts, urban planning, public administration, and architecture, which are gaining popularity among students.

The global job marketplace demands highly skilled individuals. To meet this demand global universities are prioritizing courses that can enrich skills such as digital literacy, data analytics, and various soft skills such as communication, leadership, creativity, and critical thinking. In response to this, universities are including short-term courses, boot camps, seminars, and certification courses that are designed to develop these skills. Additionally, programs integrating, work-study options, improving practical knowledge, and increasing self-dependency are also gaining popularity among students.

To assist students and prepare them for industry requirements, universities also collaborate with employers to place their students in top companies globally. The cost of education is a major concern among students who opt for study abroad programs but now there are more financial aid opportunities, and scholarships available for students than ever. Students also get opportunities to learn AI, Machine learning programs, and sustainable development courses which are quite in demand in the market. This not only exposes students to new technologies but also enhances their knowledge and skills.

Overall, international educational programs are becoming student-friendly, accessible, and inclusive and focusing more on providing career-oriented platforms, these significant changes attract more students every year for their study abroad journey.

Now let's examine in detail how these programs changed their structure, scope, goals, and accessibility with changing visa rules and regulations for students.

How are the Abroad Study Programs Changing:

1. Technological Advancements

The role of technology in the student's life cannot be underestimated, as it changes the way they think, learn, interact, and explore the world. If we consider the role of technology in reshaping international education, it completely altered from virtual classroom facilities to personalized learning, technology became a game changer and enhanced its learners-dependency never imagined before. After the Pandemic the evolution of these digital learning platforms started burgeoning in the market and soon they started ruling the whole world with the involvement of new tools then and now. How technology is changing global educational programs let's understand it by these points:

a. The connectivity provided by technology has transcended the geographical distance and students do not feel lonely or away from home,  which earlier was a major concern for parents.

b. Foreign language acquisition is another key aspect of studying abroad programs, facilitated by language learning apps, online language exchange programs, and AI-powered language learning tutors.

c. The prospective students have the facility to explore their dream universities through a 360-degree virtual campus tour, in which they can view campus facilities,  food, and accommodations.

d. The biggest change that technology brings to the study abroad program is providing digital classroom experiences, now students can access online classes, and digital resources and use collaborative tools to be engaged with their course work.

e. Virtual and hybrid learning programs offered by various universities help students to complete their portion of course work online, facilitating to balance work and other commitments easily.

f. The integration of AI revolutionized the study abroad experience of students by making it more accessible. For instance, AI-driven platforms can analyze the student's profiles and match them with the requirements of universities. This step streamlines the process, saves time, and facilitates better alignment between students and academic requirements.

2. Focus on Sustainability

With the urgency to address the changing climatic conditions and environmental degradation, study abroad programs are incorporating sustainability and eco-friendly courses for students which reflects their commitment towards environmental responsibility. Coupled with that, universities are providing green travel options, eco-friendly accommodation, local and organic food, zero-waste initiatives, sustainable living workshops, and community-based projects to educate and empower students in the field of sustainability.

The top universities around the world, providing courses and programs in sustainability are:  The University of Edinburgh, which ranked fourth globally and has the tag of UK’s most sustainable university, is offering an MSc in Advanced Sustainable Design course, The University of British Columbia is offering sustainable process engineering course, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate degrees relating to sustainability in the fields of applied science, arts, education, forestry, food system and science. In addition, The University of California is offering a minor, major, and postgraduate degree in environmental policy and management, teaching students to apply concepts of environmental science to real-world policy and management.

Specialized courses designed to promote environmental stewardship are offered by numerous international universities. For example, IES Abroad encourages students to choose eco-certified lodgings with energy-efficient systems, recycling programs, and low-carbon modes of transportation. In a similar vein, CIEE offers specialized courses like sustainable development in Costa Rica and marine conservation in Bonaire. SIT Study Abroad emphasizes hands-on learning in environmental justice and sustainability through programs that frequently include community-based conservation, agricultural, and renewable energy projects.

They also encourage recycling and composting methods and have zero-waste programs in place at their learning locations. In nations like Iceland and Peru, where students work with local communities on sustainability initiatives like solar panel installations and water purification systems, the Green Program places a strong emphasis on teaching about renewable energy. Initiatives run by universities, such as the University of The Global Learning Hub in California promote eco-friendly travel and offer tools to help students calculate and offset their carbon footprints. Additionally, they provide scholarships to students participating in study abroad programs with a sustainability focus.

3. Changes in Visa Policies

Indian students are facing numerous challenges as the immigration policies for major study destinations like Canada, the UK, the USA, and Australia have shifted. These sudden policy changes have led the students in a state of uncertainty and anxiety, questioning building the future in these countries. The major challenges faced by Indian students are multi-faceted stemming from tightened visa regulations, increased scrutiny, and broader political shifts in their chosen destinations.

a. Canada’s Efforts to Deport International Students

Canada has always been a prime choice for students as it offers students quality education and also provides a chance to stay permanently. However, recent changes in visa regulations have left various students confused and worried about being at risk of being deported because of visa and documentation issues. The new rules such as a 35% reduction in student visa approval and removal of work permit eligibility for some colleges have raised concerns among the students and educators. However, the Canadian government is changing the rules for smaller, less popular colleges that are taking advantage of students. Although this step is intended to save students from fake institutions, this measure has seriously impacted the larger international student community.

Another problem the students are facing is a shortage of rented houses in cities like Toronto and Vancouver, the rising rents, and an increasing number of student communities, creating a lack of affordable housing. As a result, the Canadian government has made immigration policies stricter, following that now the student visas are closely examined and permanent residency is becoming harder to follow. While once Canada was considered a welcoming place now students are uncertain about their future there.

b.UK’s New Visa Rules and Immigration Pressure:

Similarly, the UK has also introduced strict visa regulations that have shattered the dreams of Indian students to pursue their education there. These new regulations make post-study work visas tougher for Indian students and challenge their stay in the UK after completing their studies. The UK government has announced that dependent visas will no longer be allowed for most international students, except students who are pursuing PhD and postgraduate degrees. In addition to this, students will get work visas only after they complete their programs. This led to increasing the financial burden on students and making their families anxious, questioning whether the UK study programs are still a favourable choice for them or not.

c. Australia’s Student Cap and Visa Changes

The Australian government recently kept a cap on the number of foreign students migrating to the country, making it more expensive and challenging to pursue their courses from there. Additionally, the visa fees surged more than double, also controlling the students' staying period in Australia.

The major changes in Australia are setting limits on the enrollment number of students at universities and also new housing requirements to accommodate the growing number of students. Furthermore, students will face stricter English language requirements and a surge in application fees now at A$1,600, Australia has become one of the most expensive places for international students.

These changes are part of a larger effort to ensure that the benefits of Australia’s education system do not negatively impact the local population. Rising living costs and pressure on public services have led to calls for tighter immigration controls. For Indian students, who have long considered Australia a top choice for higher education, these changes are disappointing.

4. Impact of these changes on student mobility and program selection

The visa changes have significantly affected the student's mobility and program selection in various ways, a few are mentioned below:

a. Reduced Enrollment:

Previously,  millions of students migrated to top universities to pursue their higher education, but as the visa policies have changed these stricter regulations have significantly declined the international student's enrollment number. Countries such as Australia, the UK, and Canada took strict measures challenging the students to meet the new criteria, compelling them to look for alternative study destinations.

b. Shift in Popular Destinations:

While once USA, Canada, UK were the prime destinations for pursuing higher education, as the visa policies changed, students were compelled to choose other countries that have more feasible visa requirements and low entry barriers. Mow students are choosing Germany, Japan, and South Korea to pursue their higher education as these have fewer restrictions on visas.

c. Program Selection:

Students are now more likely to select programs that offer better support and guidance through the visa application process. Universities that provide comprehensive pre-departure orientations, visa assistance, and clear pathways to post-study work opportunities are becoming more attractive to prospective students.

d. Focus on Quality and Reputation:

With increased competition for international students, institutions are focusing more on enhancing the quality of their programs and their global reputation. This includes offering scholarships, improving campus facilities, and providing robust support services for international students.

e. Impact on Work Opportunities:

After completing higher education at top universities, students look for job experiences to earn better and secure their future, as these new visa regulations put restrictions on study-work permits, disappointing the students more. This can influence their program selection, as they may prioritize countries with more favourable work opportunities.

Overall, visa changes have created both challenges and opportunities for international students and educational institutions. By staying informed and seeking guidance, students can navigate these changes and make informed decisions about their study abroad plans.

5. Tips for navigating the new visa requirements:

Students who want to move abroad for higher education need to do thorough research before commencing their journey. As the student visa clearance process takes ample time, it is important to start early for the process for any unforeseen delay. After selecting the program that suits students' academic goals, it is crucial to have an acceptance letter from the university. Following that, the student should begin the application process in advance and gather all the necessary documents like academic transcripts, financial statements, health insurance, English proficiency test scores, letter of recommendation, and visa application forms such as  DS-160 for the US, Tier 4 Student Visa Application for UK, IMM 1294 for Canada and Subclass 500 for Australia.

Along with that, preparation for visa interview is also the main practice as students have to confidently answer the questions related to their study plans and financial situation. It is crucial to keep an eye on changing visa policies as it can impact a student's chosen destination and application process. Moreover, students must be honest throughout the application process about their documents, and financial status and answering the interview questions, as truthful information can streamline the process.

Finally, plan finances carefully to ensure applicants have enough funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and other costs associated with studying abroad. These changes aim to manage migration more effectively, but they also create additional hurdles for international students. By being well-prepared and proactive, students can navigate these challenges and pursue their academic goals abroad.

6. Financial Support and Scholarships

Studying abroad is unquestionably a dream come true opportunity for students but these dreams come with financial burdens too. However, numerous scholarships and financial aid options are available to reduce the cost. The Indian government is also providing scholarships to support students who want to study abroad.

Governments around the world, including those of Canada, the UK, the US, and Australia are providing various scholarships, and financial aid programs for international students to support their studies abroad. These scholarships cover partially or fully the cost of living expenses, tuition fees, and other expenses. There are various types of scholarships available to assist students, for instance, merit-based scholarships including the Amber scholarship, Stanford University scholarships, and Need-based scholarships which cover tuition fees, living expenses as well as travel expenses for example Harvard University financial aid and Chevening scholarships. In addition, government scholarships such as Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship, and National Overseas scholarships also support international education.

Students who are pursuing their degree in specific fields such as engineering, medicine, or environmental science can get financial aid from Cornell University Tata Scholarships and University of Oxford Engineering Scholarships.  Additionally, certain universities have established partnerships with external organizations that provide financial support to international students, making it easier for them to find funding.

7. Strategies for Finding and Applying for Financial Support

To find the right scholarship or financial support it is important to do comprehensive research and proper planning. Students can look at the official websites of universities and government education departments as they usually list available scholarships and provide proper application guidelines. Along with this, there are various scholarship search engines and databases available online for instance ScholarshipPortal, Chevening, and DAAD, which can help identify opportunities based on your country of origin, field of study, and destination.

Before applying for scholarships students should check all eligibility requirements and submit all the necessary documents as per the instructions. It’s also important to pay attention to deadlines and follow the application instructions carefully. Finally, don't hesitate to contact the university’s financial aid office or scholarship provider for any clarifications during the application process.

8. Cultural and Language Immersion

Study abroad programs have evolved significantly in recent years, with a growing emphasis on cultural and language immersion. Traditional study abroad experiences were often limited to classroom learning, but today’s programs are focused on providing students with deeper, more meaningful interactions with the culture and language of the host country.

a. New Approaches to Cultural and Language Immersion

Modern study abroad programs are increasingly integrating cultural and language immersion into everyday experiences. Rather than just offering language classes, these programs encourage students to live and interact with local communities, participate in internships, volunteer work, and attend cultural events. This hands-on approach helps students learn the language more effectively by using it in real-life situations, whether in casual conversations, internships, or social settings. Many programs now offer homestays, where students live with local families, giving them firsthand exposure to the culture and language in a natural environment.

b . Cross-Cultural Understanding and Global Citizenship

Study abroad programs today are designed to foster cross-cultural understanding and promote global citizenship. By living and studying in different cultural environments, students develop a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives and values. This helps them build skills such as adaptability, empathy, and problem-solving, which are crucial for success in today’s interconnected world. Many study abroad programs now include workshops or seminars on cultural sensitivity, global issues, and international relations, further preparing students to engage meaningfully with global challenges. Through these experiences, students not only enhance their academic knowledge but also broaden their worldview, helping them become global citizens who can navigate and contribute to an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

9. Career Development Opportunities

In recent years, study abroad programs have increasingly integrated internships and work-study opportunities, providing students with a more practical and career-focused experience. These programs go beyond just academic learning, allowing students to gain real-world work experience while immersing themselves in a different culture. This integration is helping students enhance their employability and career readiness in a global job market.

By participating in internships or work-study programs abroad, students gain valuable professional experience that is highly regarded by employers. These opportunities allow students to apply what they've learned in the classroom to real-world situations, develop essential skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, and build a global professional network. Furthermore, students who work in international environments demonstrate adaptability, cross-cultural communication, and global awareness, all of which are increasingly important qualities in today's interconnected job market.

For many students, having an international internship or work experience on their resume significantly boosts their employability, setting them apart from other job candidates who may only have local experience. Additionally, some study abroad programs also provide career services, workshops, and networking events designed to help students translate their international experiences into career opportunities.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the landscape of study abroad programs has undergone significant transformation in recent years, especially in 2024. From the integration of technological advancements to a heightened focus on sustainability, these changes are making international education more accessible, dynamic, and career-oriented. Students are no longer limited to traditional learning methods but are now able to leverage digital platforms, gain hands-on experience through internships, and immerse themselves in diverse cultures and languages.

Moreover, shifting visa policies and new opportunities for financial aid and scholarships are reshaping the global mobility of students, encouraging them to explore a wider array of destinations and disciplines. Countries that once dominated the study abroad scene are now sharing the stage with emerging destinations that offer favourable conditions, both academically and financially.

As the global job market becomes increasingly interconnected, the emphasis on building a well-rounded, globally-minded workforce through study abroad programs is more relevant than ever. These programs provide students with the skills, experiences, and cultural insights that not only enhance their education but also prepare them to thrive in an ever-evolving professional world.

Ultimately, the future of study abroad programs looks bright. With a greater emphasis on personal growth, career readiness, and global citizenship, students now have more opportunities than ever to enrich their academic journey and set themselves up for success in a diverse and competitive world.
