UN Celebrates the Intersection of AI and Education: UNESCO to Lead Discussion on Human-Centered Approaches

Transforming Education with AI: Key Themes for International Day of Education 2025 Revealed

UNESCO is pleased to announce that the International Day of Education will be celebrated on 24 January 2025 at the UN Headquarters in New York, in collaboration with the UN Group of Friends for Education and Lifelong Learning. Under the theme “AI and Education: Challenges and Opportunities,” the event will explore the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on education. The discussion will examine how AI is revolutionising teaching and learning practices, while education plays a critical role in ensuring that AI is developed ethically, inclusively, and in alignment with human values.

The event aims to encourage the reimagining of education in the age of AI, exploring new and enhanced possibilities for teaching, learning, school environments, curricula, educational organization, and assessment. It will also focus on promoting the development of critical AI literacy by highlighting how educators and learners can be equipped with the necessary competencies to understand, evaluate, and influence AI technologies. This initiative aligns with the UNESCO AI Competency Frameworks for Teachers and Students, ensuring that both educators and students are prepared to engage effectively with AI in an ethical and informed manner.

Furthermore, the event advocates for a human-centred approach to AI integration in education, one that emphasizes human control, transparency, and accountability in its design and implementation. This approach will ensure that it enhances human capabilities, upholds human dignity and agency, and promotes justice and sustainability throughout its lifecycle. Additionally, AI must complement rather than replace, the essential human aspects of learning, such as fostering in-person relationships and emotional intelligence. The conference will promote AI literacy, advocate for ethical, human-centred AI integration, and ensure that it enhances teaching and learning while respecting human values.

Editor's Note:

The upcoming conference will emphasize the crucial connection between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and education, providing a platform to explore how AI will transform teaching, learning, and educational frameworks. Organized by UNESCO, the event will highlight the importance of a human-centred approach to AI, ensuring its development is ethical, inclusive, and aligned with human values. It will be essential for both educators and learners to acquire the necessary skills to navigate the rapidly evolving AI landscape responsibly and effectively.

Skoobuzz anticipates that the ongoing discussions and developments will demonstrate how crucial it will be for educators to embrace AI in guiding the future of education.
