Future of Work in Focus: "AI Uprising" Conference Examines AI’s Role in Global Transformation

A.I. Uprising" Conference: Georgetown University in Qatar Reveals Expert Keynote Speakers

Experts from various fields around the world are discussing the potential of artificial intelligence and how its power can be harnessed. A series of events and seminars were held, such as the AI World Congress in the UK (November 27-28), ICML in South Korea, AI Expo Europe, and the AAAI Conference in Canada, and have focused on how this technology can be used responsibly in the future for the well-being of society. In line with these discussions, Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) has announced the agenda for the ninth edition of its Hiwaraat conference series, A.I. Uprising: Opportunities and Challenges for the Future of Work and Its Impact on the Environment.

This much-anticipated event, scheduled for December 5 at the Waldorf Astoria West Bay, is being coordinated with Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. What sets this conference apart is its thought-provoking discourse on globally relevant issues. It provides an inclusive platform for scholars, policymakers, and the public to share knowledge and explore innovative solutions to address these challenges. In addition, the event will feature esteemed experts from the technology, academia, and policy sectors to discuss the critical issues related to the changing nature of work, driven by the environmental crisis and the rise of Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Moriba Jah, a visionary space scientist and Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin, will lead the conference.

He is the Director of the Decision Intelligence Group at the Oden Institute and the Lead for Space Security and Safety at the Robert Strauss Center. His distinguished career includes being a former NASA spacecraft navigator and a U.S. delegate to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. Utilizing his extensive experience in AI and machine learning, he will present an enlightening discourse on Navigating the Ethics and Sustainability of AI.

Dr. Santiago García-Couto, the conference co-organizer and Assistant Professor of Economics, underlined the widespread apprehension and uncertainty surrounding the development of artificial intelligence. He emphasized the importance of engaging with experts who can shed light on the actual challenges and help envision how AI could be used to transform the world positively. This conference will serve as a platform to address AI’s potential and the barriers to its responsible and beneficial use. Additionally, the event will feature a presentation and performance by Dr. Merritt Moore, a Quantum Ballerina, adjunct Professor of Practice, and Distinguished Artist in Residence at NYU Abu Dhabi. Dr. Moore, a quantum physicist and professional ballet dancer, is recognized for her groundbreaking work in robot-human interaction and the creative application of AI in the arts.

These distinguished speaker’s insights will form the foundation for the conference’s exploration of AI’s significant impact on cognition, interactions with the world, and its implications for employment, job structures, and environmental sustainability. Panel discussions are expected to focus on AI's role in energy transformations, climate change, global equity, and its potential to drive innovation, enhance human welfare, and improve labor productivity and justice.

Amid growing concerns over job insecurity and environmental degradation, the AI Uprising conference offers a fresh perspective on the future of work. It aims to identify how AI’s opportunities and challenges presented can offer interconnected solutions that could ultimately reshape the future for the better.
