Marking a significant milestone in Indian higher education, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) is commemorating its centenary with the National Conference of Vice Chancellors, hosted at Amity University Uttar Pradesh (AUUP), Noida. With the theme “Envisioning Future Higher Education: The Pivotal Role of India,” the event reflects AIU’s century-long legacy of advancing academic collaboration, shaping policy, and strengthening institutional development nationwide.
According to reports, the inaugural session, scheduled for 23 June 2025, will be graced by the Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, alongside Ashok K Chauhan, founder president of the Amity Education Group. During the ceremony, the Vice President is expected to unveil a commemorative Coffee Table Book celebrating AIU’s historical contributions to the Indian higher education ecosystem.
Furthermore, the valedictory session will reportedly feature the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel, who is set to release a special edition of University News. The event is anticipated to attract over 500 vice chancellors, approximately 300 attending in person and 200 virtually, as well as representatives from national bodies such as AICTE, NAAC, ICAR, and NDSC. The two-day conference will include two plenary sessions on ‘Globalisation and Internationalisation’ and ‘Envisioning Future Higher Education: The Pivotal Role of India’, complemented by 10 parallel tracks exploring forward-looking themes like artificial intelligence integration, virtual and augmented reality in education, cybersecurity, experiential learning, and sustainable campus design.
At a pre-conference media briefing, AIU Secretary General Dr Pankaj Mittal described the event as a defining point in AIU’s legacy of influencing higher education policy. She emphasised that the chosen theme underlines the organisation’s vision of positioning India as a global leader in education and innovation. Dr Mittal also highlighted the breadth of AIU’s network, which includes 1,086 member universities,19 of them international and affirmed that the Vice President’s involvement reinforces AIU’s role in national development.
In addition, AUUP Vice Chancellor Dr Balvinder Shukla stressed the importance of aligning higher education with national development goals such as Viksit Bharat@2047, by fostering industry partnerships, inclusive pedagogies, technological advancement, and entrepreneurial capacity. Echoing this vision, AIU President Prof Vinay Kumar Pathak described the conference as a pivotal opportunity to shape the future of India’s higher education landscape.
Concluding the event, a University Action Plan is expected to be presented, identifying reforms in critical areas including emerging technologies, inclusive education policies, sustainability, and inter-institutional collaboration. The conference will also generate a strategic policy paper titled “Future of Higher Education,” intended to guide long-term transformation through innovative teaching, digital integration, and sustainable practices. The outcomes will be shared with state governors, ministries, and regulatory bodies such as UGC, AICTE, and NAAC to inform policy reform and reinforce India’s global standing in higher education.
