Reconstruction Using Technology: Arunachal Pradesh Achieves Landmark feat, built India’s First 3D-Printed School

Arunachal Pradesh, the “land of dawn-lit mountains” renowned for its rich biodiversity and heritage sports, has recently captured global attention with its innovative achievement: the construction of India’s first 3D-printed school. On July 30, State Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced on social media that the Government Secondary School in Itanagar was rebuilt using cutting-edge 3D concrete printing technology.

On November 3, the previous year a fire started in a nearby house and spread to the school which partially burnt nine classrooms and destroyed all of the furniture and electrical appliances, despite this destruction the school was rebuilt completely in just two months which is truly commendable. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an additive manufacturing technique that transforms a digital design into a physical object. This process involves depositing thin layers of material, which can be liquid or powdered plastic, metal, or cement, and then fusing these layers to build the final object.

The State government, known for integrating advanced technologies into its projects, opted for 3D printing to rebuild the school's classrooms. State Chief Minister Pema Khandu praised the initiative on social media, commending those involved for creating a significant milestone in providing a cost-effective and sustainable solution to educational needs. He highlighted that such investments in cutting-edge technology could enhance educational access in remote and marginalized areas. The application of 3D printing technology in this project not only repaired the damaged school but also demonstrated its potential for construction and infrastructure development. An official noted that 3D concrete printing made the rebuilding process more efficient and cost-effective compared to traditional methods. According to a government source, "The successful completion of India's first 3D-printed school sets a precedent for future projects and showcases the potential of integrating advanced technologies into the construction industry."
