Uplifting Marginalized Voices: The Impact of Atul Kumar’s Admission to IIT Dhanbad

Education as Empowerment: Atul Kumar's Story and the Role of the Judiciary

The legal mechanism in India plays a vital role in promoting justice and equality by safeguarding individual rights and ensuring fair opportunities for all. The judiciary contributes to building a more inclusive society by protecting marginalized individuals and enabling them to pursue their aspirations. A recent example is the case of 18-year-old Dalit youth Atul Kumar from Uttar Pradesh who expressed his profound gratitude for the Supreme Court's intervention that allowed him to regain his seat in the electronics engineering program at IIT Dhanbad.

Kumar lost his admission after missing a fee deadline of Rs 17,500. He emphasized that without the Court's order, he would have faced significant regret and uncertainty about his future. If the Supreme Court had not acted, he might have had no choice but to attempt the JEE Mains in 2025 instead of pursuing his B Tech at IIT Dhanbad.

Reflecting on his preparations for the entrance exam, Kumar acknowledged the challenges he faced but credited his in-depth study and hard work for his success. He noted, "There are no shortcuts to success," highlighting the struggles of talented individuals from a financially disadvantaged background. Marginalized students should receive support from the government and NGOs to ensure that financial challenges do not hinder their success. Despite their financial hardship his family always encouraged him to focus on his studies.

Initially, Kumar's favorite subject was Mathematics, but after encountering increased challenges during his advanced JEE coaching, he discovered a new passion for Chemistry while maintaining his proficiency in Math. Looking ahead, he plans to work for a reputable company after completing his B Tech, with the long-term goal of starting his venture once he secures adequate funding.
