Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy Leads Benha University’s Push for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Innovation Soars at Benha University with New Startup Incubator Programs

Benha University, established in 1976 in Egypt, became an independent institution in 2005, offering diverse programs across 15 colleges, including Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture. With around 110,873 students and 5,401 faculty members, the university is dedicated to education, research, and community development. It actively engages in international collaborations and has received funding from the World Bank and the European Union for various projects.

Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, President of the University, chaired a meeting with the Executive Council for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which was attended by Prof. El-Sayed Fouda, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development; Prof. Jehan Abdel-Hadi, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research; along with other council members. Prof. El-Gizawy highlighted that the council reviewed various reports submitted by the directors of centers and units focused on promoting innovation and entrepreneurship at Benha University. Consequently, the council approved the launch of a new initiative, "From the Lab to the Market," aimed at leveraging the scientific research outputs of faculty members and researchers for commercial and intellectual benefit.

Furthermore, the council introduced the Young Researcher Initiative, designed to enhance the scientific research capabilities of undergraduate students. In line with this, the electronic portal development team was tasked with creating a digital application for the submission and processing of patent examination forms. Additionally, the council approved the incubation of five new startups through the Benha University Biotechnology Incubator. This initiative, funded by the Launch Program of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and the university's Research Fund, brings the total number of incubated startups to eight.

Prof. El-Gizawy emphasized the importance of transforming entrepreneurship and innovation activities into tangible prototypes and products that would support the "Bidaya" Company, which is currently being established to market the services of Benha University. The Innovation Council’s overarching goal is to foster a culture of innovation, support the development of innovative startups, and enhance education and training in the fields of research and development. The council also seeks to build strategic partnerships and promote sustainability.

Moreover, the council is committed to providing support for successful projects and reviewing and updating policies and strategies related to innovation and entrepreneurship. It aims to collaborate with both government and private sector entities that support innovation, increase the number of patents and startups within the university, improve the outcomes of education and scientific research, and enhance the university’s role in contributing to the economic and social development of the surrounding community. The meeting at Benha University, led by Prof. Nasser El-Gizawy, highlighted new initiatives to bridge academic research with commercial applications. This includes launching "From the Lab to the Market" and the Young Researcher Initiative, and supporting new startups through the Biotechnology Incubator.
