Cambridge International Education Confirms Decision to Relinquish Ofqual Recognition by 2024

Cambridge International Education to Discontinue Cambridge Pre-U Qualifications, Surrenders Ofqual Status

An Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation designs develops, delivers, and awards qualifications in England and Northern Ireland, with Ofqual regulating these organisations to ensure their qualifications meet established standards of quality and integrity. However, Cambridge International Education has announced its decision to relinquish its status as an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation.

In October 2019, Cambridge International Education notified Ofqual of its intention to discontinue its Cambridge Pre-U qualifications and withdraw them from regulation. In February 2022, it confirmed to formally surrender its Ofqual recognition for Cambridge Pre-U once the process was completed. Cambridge International Education no longer has students enrolled in its regulated provision. The surrender will take effect on 20 December 2024, after which no qualifications offered by Cambridge International Education will be regulated by Ofqual.

The organisation previously offered 21 regulated Cambridge Pre-U qualifications and issued 16 certificates last academic year. It has assured Ofqual that this decision will not impact students. Inquiries should be directed to Cambridge International Education. Ofqual stated that when awarding organisations consider surrendering recognition, it works closely with them to protect students' interests. A list of recognised awarding organisations and their qualifications is available on the Register of Regulated Qualifications.

It is important to note that Cambridge International Education is a part of Cambridge University Press & Assessment, which also includes OCR and Cambridge English. The surrender of Ofqual recognition for Cambridge International Education does not affect the regulated status of OCR and Cambridge English, both of which remain recognised by Ofqual. This decision marks the end of Cambridge International Education's regulated qualification offerings under Ofqual, as it moves to discontinue its Cambridge Pre-U qualifications. While the decision does not impact students currently enrolled, it reflects the organisation's shift in focus, with no further regulated qualifications to be offered from December 2024.

Editor's Note:

Cambridge International Education's decision to give up its status as an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation signals a major change in the UK qualifications system. While there will be little immediate effect on students—since no students are currently enrolled in its regulated programs—the long-term consequences are worth noting.
This move highlights the need for educational organisations to stay financially stable and adaptable, particularly as regulations and market conditions evolve. Ofqual's commitment to protecting students during transitions is reassuring, showing that educational standards will remain a priority.

Skoobuzz believes this change reflects a broader trend in education where institutions must regularly evaluate and adjust their offerings to meet new challenges and goals. The effects on the educational sector and how qualifications are offered will be closely watched in the years ahead.
