Class 12 Students May Get June CBSE Exam Option: Centre's Initiative

Considering the Second Chance: Centre Eyes June CBSE Board Exam to Aid Student Performance"

Every year approximately 1,62,1224 students appear for the CBSE Board exams across the country and 87.98% of students clear the exam. Students preparing for board exams often experience immense pressure, primarily because these exams occur only once a year. This means that if students wish to improve their scores, they do not have a second chance to do so. To resolve this issue as well as to ensure fair evaluation of students' academic performance, the Government has taken revolutionary steps.

As suggested by the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE), the central government is thinking of holding a second board test in June 2026 for students enrolled in Class 12 programs at Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools, as reported by The Indian Express. Currently, a Class 12 student who is following the CBSE curriculum takes the board test once a year, in February or March, results for which are announced in May. If a student's score falls short of expectations, they can retake one subject in July during "supplementary exams." The "supplementary exams" were held on July 15 of this year. To lessen the strain on pupils, the recently adopted National Education Policy 2020 suggests switching from large-scalp exams with multiple choice questions to biennial board exams.

The education government has requested that the CBSE draft a proposal for conducting two board exams for class 12 pupils annually starting in 2026 in compliance with NEP 2020, according to The Indian Express. As mentioned in the article, the two-board test system would probably hold its first exam in February or March and its second exam is planned in June. In addition, rather than only being able to take one subject at a time, students in Class 12 may be able to take "improvement exams" or "supplementary exams" for any or all courses. This second round of board exams would take the CBSE roughly 15 days to administer, and it would take them another month to announce the results. This implies that results will probably be released in August if the tests are held in June.

The administration has also suggested not hold the first board exam before February, taking into account the entrance exam timetable and the workload of teachers for marking. The Center also anticipates that a portion of the student body will not show up for the second board exams, which will lighten the instructors' assessment burden.
Based on the National Education Policy 2020, the NCFSE states that every student should be given the chance to sit for the board exams twice a year, with the highest score being taken into account."In the long run, it will be possible to take a subject board exam right after the "school term" (also known as "semester-wise" or "on-demand" board exams)," according to NCFSE.

Editor’s Note:

The Center's consideration of holding a second CBSE board test in June is a brave and progressive move in response to the pandemic's effects on education. It emphasizes the government's dedication to placing a high priority on students' academic progress and well-being to make sure they are suitably equipped for their future pursuits in these unpredictable times. As negotiations continue, the possible introduction of this additional test is set to reshape the parameters of academic evaluation and assistance inside the Indian educational system.
