Enhancing Student Experiences: New Exchange Programs Between Charles University and UK Institutions

18-Strong Delegation from Charles University Visits UK for Academic Collaboration

Charles University, the oldest and one of the most distinguished universities in Central Europe, was established in 1348. With a history spanning over six centuries, it has grown into a renowned institution catering to approximately 50,000 students, including more than 10,000 international students. The university's staff comprises 8,600 individuals, over 3,900 of whom are renowned academics. Ranked among the world's top 150 universities in several disciplines, including anatomy and physiology, economics, geography, linguistics, and political science and international studies, Charles University continues to excel in various fields of study. The institution also fosters strong international relationships, with bilateral agreements in place with 58 British universities, attracting around 95 British students to Prague annually.

Between March 27 and 31, 2023, 18 delegates from Charles University, led by Rector Milena Králíčková and her vice-rectors, visited the UK to strengthen partnerships with six British universities: LSHTM, Imperial College London, UCL, Cardiff University, St. Andrews, and Edinburgh. The Prague UK Science and Innovation Network supported the mission, organizing the visit and accompanying the delegation to key meetings. During the visit, numerous side meetings were held between faculty members and researchers across various sectors, ranging from pedagogy to biomedical and sports sciences. Over the week, more than 20 meetings took place, with over 40 British leaders and researchers participating.

The mission was a resounding success, emphasizing the UK's role as a key partner for Charles University and the quality of British higher education. Rector Milena Králíčková prioritized the UK for her first extended foreign visit, highlighting the importance of British networks. The initially planned five-person team grew to 18 delegates due to significant faculty interest and the mission was fully funded by Charles University, demonstrating its strong commitment to collaboration.

Discussions focused on student and teacher mobility, celebrating existing exchanges, such as those between Charles University and Imperial College London’s Realistic Graphics and Imaging Group, and LSHTM’s Parasitology department. New annual exchanges of five law students with Cardiff University were agreed upon. Research collaborations aimed at leveraging institutional strengths, including a Horizon Europe Teaming bid worth €1 million with UCL and KTH Leuven, which, although unfunded, continues to foster cooperation.

Policy discussions concentrated on research security, privacy, ethics, and issues like sustainability, net-zero pledges, energy security, and inflation. To strengthen collaboration, the Rector of Charles University established a "strategic partnership seed fund" to support staff exchanges with British counterparts. The fund aims to foster educational and research connections, with expected outcomes including mobility, joint publications, and workshops. Each project will receive an average of £5,000, with a goal of six new collaborations annually between Charles University and UK universities. The visit to the UK reinforced existing partnerships and also opened new avenues for collaboration, emphasizing the shared commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
