Renowned Climate Scientist to Deliver 2025 Hopke Lecture at Clarkson University

In alignment with its commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering critical dialogue, the Clarkson University Institute for a Sustainable Environment (ISE) has announced Chandra Venkataraman as the invited speaker for the esteemed 2025 Hopke Lecture Series. This lecture, titled "Unraveling Multi-Scale Air Quality Challenges in India: Science, Models, and Strategy," is scheduled for Monday, April 7, at noon in the Barben Rooms of Clarkson University's Cheel Campus Center. Open to the public, the event promises to deliver valuable insights into pressing air quality issues through scientifically grounded approaches and strategic solutions.

The Hopke Lecture Series, supported by the Philip K. and Eleanor F. Hopke Endowment for the Institute for a Sustainable Environment, serves to honor Dr. Philip Hopke’s influential contributions to air quality, aerosol science, and atmospheric chemistry. Since 1989, the Hopkes have played a pivotal role in advancing environmental science at Clarkson University. The series seeks to inspire research engagement while encouraging scientists to contribute to public policy development by showcasing distinguished researchers in the field. Chandra Venkataraman, a professor at IIT Bombay's Centre for Climate Studies and Chemical Engineering, brings immense expertise to the lecture. She is also a Visiting Professor at UC Berkeley’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Her impactful research in aerosol science explores the relationships between pollution particle properties and atmospheric processes, shedding light on critical phenomena such as monsoon suppression and heatwave intensification in India.

Dr. Venkataraman has been instrumental in redirecting air pollution research to focus on non-urban areas and the informal economy, highlighting the intricate dynamics between localised and regional pollution sources. With over 150 research publications, four patents, and an authored book, she is a leading figure in the field. As the founding head of the Centre for Climate Studies at IIT Bombay, she has played an essential role in shaping climate and air quality programs across South Asia.

In addition to her research, Dr. Venkataraman has spearheaded multi-institutional networks, including COALESCE, which focuses on studying carbonaceous aerosols in India. Her involvement in global policy networks, such as the UNEP's Climate and Clean Air Coalition, demonstrates her commitment to addressing environmental challenges on a global scale. A dedicated advocate for women in STEM, she has mentored numerous students and achieved recognition as a Fellow of the National Academies of Science and Engineering in India and the World Academy of Sciences. Her accolades include the IIT Delhi Distinguished Alumni Award and a Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship, further cementing her position as a distinguished figure in the field.
