2025 APAIE Conference Highlights Taiwan's Efforts in Higher Education and Technology

The Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) Conference stands as a premier annual event, bringing together global leaders in international education, including educators, policymakers, and institutions from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. By offering a dynamic platform to exchange ideas, foster collaborations, and address evolving challenges in higher education, the conference is pivotal in driving academic innovation and shaping the future of global partnerships.

In this vibrant setting, Taiwan’s delegation is making a significant mark at the 2025 APAIE Conference, held in Delhi, India. This participation underscores Taiwan’s dedication to enhancing educational ties with India and the broader region. The delegation, led by Wu Cheng-chih, the chair of the Taipei-based Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET), includes 44 representatives from 15 universities. Their mission is to highlight Taiwan’s strengths as a hub for technological innovation and academic excellence, aiming to attract more international students to the country.

Throughout the event, which took place from March 24 to 28, Baushuan Ger, the head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India, extended his greetings to the delegation, further strengthening cross-cultural connections. APAIE President Venky Shankararaman and Executive Director Louise Kinnaird also met with the group, amplifying the significance of Taiwan’s presence. Wu Cheng-chih emphasized Taiwan’s efforts to expand educational cooperation with India, recognizing the potential to collaborate with India's vast pool of engineering and technology talent. He expressed optimism about fostering academia-industry partnerships in key sectors, including biotechnology, information and communications technology, and semiconductors.

In a complementary initiative, FICHET organized the 2025 Taiwan-India Higher Education Leaders Forum on March 26 in Delhi, gathering nearly 70 university leaders from both nations. During this forum, FICHET and the Association of Indian Universities renewed a cooperative memorandum of understanding, originally signed in 2010. Discussions revolved around advancements in semiconductor technology and the implementation of the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the commitment to meaningful collaboration.

According to statistics from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, over 100,000 students from Asia-Pacific nations, including 2,500 from India, pursued education in Taiwan during the 2024-2025 academic year. This group accounted for 87 percent of all international students in the country. Building on this momentum, Taiwan continues to invest in recruitment and retention programs for international students, aiming to strengthen educational exchanges and personnel flow with regional partners. Taiwan’s active participation in the 2025 APAIE Conference highlights its dedication to fostering global academic collaborations, driving innovation, and creating a more interconnected future.
