FLAME University Introduces Interactive Digital Repository for India’s State and District Evolution

India’s Governance History Now Accessible Online Through FLAME University’s Digital Archive

FLAME University's Centre for Legislative Education and Research has launched a Digital Archive on India’s State Formation and District Evolution in a groundbreaking move to preserve and democratise historical governance data. This initiative, unveiled at the Transition conclave, commemorates 75 years of India's governance and administrative evolution. By providing accessible digital records, the archive sheds light on significant milestones in India's political and administrative history, offering valuable resources for researchers, students, and the general public.

At this event, the university also introduced an open-access digital repository that chronicles India's state and district formation through interactive data visualizations, archival records, and policy insights. In addition, the event featured 26 visually engaging posters illustrating the evolution of Indian States and Union Territories, as well as the development of their districts. These visual representations helped attendees understand the complex journey of India's territorial and administrative growth.

Prof. M.A. Venkataramanan, Pro Vice-Chancellor of FLAME University, emphasised that the digital repository aligns with the institution's mission to advance research-driven policy discourse across the country. Furthermore, the launch included expert-led sessions and panel discussions addressing topics such as state creation, district reform, governance structures, legal considerations, and policy challenges. These discussions provided a comprehensive view of India’s administrative and territorial progress, enriching the understanding of India’s governance evolution.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Centre for Legislative Education and Research highlighted the importance of digitising historical governance data, which has traditionally been preserved in physical documents within government bodies. He explained that this initiative makes these public knowledge resources accessible online, thereby enabling students, scholars, policymakers, and citizens to engage more deeply with India’s territorial evolution. Ultimately, this digital project represents a significant effort to promote public interaction with the nation’s governance history and its ongoing transformations.
