BHU Offers Free Hostel Stay for Graduated Bangladeshi Students Facing Uncertainty

Supporting Students: BHU Shows Compassion by Allowing Bangladeshi Graduates to Remain in Hostels Without Fees

Banaras Hindu University recently showcased a stunning effort of humanitarian compassion by providing residency to Bangladeshi students who have recently finished their studies. Bangladeshi students protested due to discontent over the country’s quota system for government jobs. This system allocates a significant portion of public sector positions to various groups based on specific criteria. The current quota system includes  56% of the government reserved for designated categories, of which 30% are earmarked for the descendants of freedom fighters who played a major role in Bangladesh’s 1971 War of Independence against Pakistan. Students and young professionals viewed this quota system as outdated and demanded reform, ensuring that government jobs must be allocated based on merit and qualifications rather than historical and familial ties.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) allowed recently graduated Bangladeshi students to stay in campus residence halls till situations in their native country improve. Normally, these students would have to leave their hostel after finishing their studies, but BHU had taken this step to offer stability and assistance during this unsettling time by extending their stay. With over 30,000 students, and 18,000 residing on campus, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia.

The coordinator of BHU's International Center, Professor SVS Raju, said that the university had taken into account the challenges that Bangladeshi students would face upon returning home. As a result, BHU decided to give these students all the support they needed and to permit them to stay in the university residence halls. He mentioned that there would be no fees for the pupils' prolonged stay. Professor Raju added that the students might stay on campus until the situation in Bangladesh stabilized, and the institution had promised to handle any further challenges they encountered while there. This kind of act not only relieves these students of their immediate financial load but also strengthens BHU's standing as an inclusive and encouraging university for students from all over the world. It is anticipated that the university's proactive approach would strengthen ties with foreign students and their home universities, reinforcing its standing as a preeminent worldwide center of education.
