Discussion on the Intersection of Culture and Democracy in Global Elections

Highlighting the Electoral Systems and their Impact World wide

The International Seminar Series to Examine Global Perspectives on Democracy and Elections was held on October 23, 2024. The event was free and open to the public but advanced registration was required to attend it. It was organised in partnership with Illinois State University's Event Management, Dining and Hospitality and the Office of Sustainability that aims to be zero-waste gathering.

This semester's series explored the intersections of U.S. and global politics, highlighting that while politics are personal and local, they also have a global dimension. Speakers and panelists also examined the complexities of governance, electoral systems, information sharing, voting and democracy in a rapidly globalizing world to provide a deeper understanding of how political dynamics influence and are influenced by international interactions.

In the session titled "Media Elections and Global Perceptions," faculty experts highlighted media's critical role in shaping public perception of elections both domestically and globally. Further, they analyzed how media coverage affects electoral outcomes, the portrayal of candidates, and global perceptions of elections. Presenters explored the dynamics of international media influence, the role of social media, and how international news impacts local political landscapes. Attendees also got a chance to learn about the media's power in shaping narratives and public opinion across borders.

Editor's Note:

The International Seminar Series illuminated the vital themes of democracy and elections around the world. As political landscapes continue to evolve, understanding the diverse electoral systems and democratic practices across different countries becomes increasingly important. This session featured expert discussions that examined how cultural, social and economic factors shape democracy and influence electoral outcomes.

Skoobuzz hopes that by this session participants will gain insights into the complexities of governance and citizen engagement in a rapidly changing world.
