Recent Student Tragedies Prompt Call for Enhanced Support Systems at IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati Takes Steps to Enhance Student Mental Well-Being Following Tragic Losses

The pressure that students face today is immense, and the challenges they experience often go beyond explanation, sometimes leading them to consider self-harm as a way out. So it is crucial to create a supportive environment where students can express their feelings and seek help.

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) announced a series of initiatives aimed at improving students' mental well-being, including dedicated counseling services at the hostel level and medical check-ups. After the third student suicide on its campus in 2024, students protested on campus and demanded more flexible attendance policies and the resignation of certain authorities.

IIT-G expressed deep sadness over the recent losses and assured that a thorough investigation into each case had been conducted, which highlighted various factors responsible for these tragic events, mostly non-academic. It is crucial to enhance support systems and adopt preventive measures to protect the well-being of students.

The institute is introducing mandatory one-time medical check-ups for students during admission to understand their medical history better. This initiative aims to provide personal support and ensure that students receive the necessary care. Also, students are encouraged to share the challenges they are facing. A self-sustaining task force has been established to reach out to every student and provide the support they need. Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, expressed the institution's commitment to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students. By prioritizing student well-being and implementing comprehensive measures, the goal is to prevent future tragedies and ensure student success.

Earlier in September month, a 21-year-old Computer Science and Engineering student from Uttar Pradesh was found dead in his room. This followed the death of a 23-year-old MTech student, also from Uttar Pradesh, discovered in her hostel on August 9. In April, a 20-year-old BTech student from Bihar was found dead in his hostel room, with authorities suspecting suicide.
In the recent senate meeting held to address the issues raised by students, they demanded an open house session for the resignation of certain senior administrative members, including the dean of academic affairs. Additionally, students advocated for a relaxation of the policy requiring 75 percent attendance to be eligible for final exams. A decision regarding this request has yet to be announced.

Editor’s Note:

The mental well-being of students is a pressing concern in today’s educational landscape, where high-pressure environments can lead them to take life-threatening steps. The recent incidents at IIT Guwahati serve as a stark reminder that parents and teachers must motivate and prepare students to face the various challenges of life. They should know and be prepared as the true test lies not only in academics but in navigating the difficulties that life presents. In response to recent tragedies, the institute has taken significant steps to enhance support systems and promote a culture of openness where students feel safe expressing their challenges. The introduction of mandatory medical check-ups and dedicated counseling services reflects a commitment to student welfare.

Skoobuzz encourages and motivates students to speak up about their life challenges and to remember that they are not alone in their struggles.
