How India’s Quad Scholarships Are Transforming Engineering Education

India’s Quad Scholarships Aim to Cultivate a Generation of Engineers

The diplomatic partnership of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States which is officially referred to as the Quad is committed to fostering an open, stable, and prosperous Indi-Pacific region, and recently the fourth Quad Leader’s summit was held in Wilmington, Delaware. India has announced a new initiative to award 50 Quad scholarships, totaling ₹4 crore which are aimed at students from the Indo-Pacific region who wish to pursue a four-year undergraduate engineering program at a government-funded technical institution in India.

According to the Wilmington Declaration Joint Statement released by the White House, the total funding for these scholarships amounts to $500,000 (approximately ₹4,17,40,225). Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while attending the summit on 22 September, highlighted several key points, emphasizing that the Quad is not aimed against any specific country but is instead focused on promoting a rules-based international order and respecting sovereignty, indirectly referencing China.

The Quad group aims to make a free, open, inclusive, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, as remarked by the Prime Minister during the summit, hosted by  President Joe Biden and attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Additionally, Modi participated in the Quad Cancer Moonshot event and held bilateral meetings with the leaders of the other Quad nations. During the summit, Prime Minister Modi asserted that the Quad is not positioned against any particular nation. He emphasized the group’s commitment to a rules-based international order, as well as the importance of respecting sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and peacefully resolving conflicts.

Modi also announced a $7.5 million initiative to provide sampling kits, detection kits, and vaccines to help combat cervical cancer. India would collaborate on radiotherapy treatments and capacity building in this area. Additionally, India plans to contribute 40 million vaccine doses for Indo-Pacific countries through GAVI and QUAD initiatives.
The upcoming Quad Leaders' Summit is set to take place in India in 2025. The joint declaration affirmed that the Quad is a lasting partnership.
