UK-Educated Leaders to Drive Industry and Research Collaborations in Indonesia

Indonesia's Minister of Higher Education has appointed three new Director Generals: Prof. Khairul Munadi (Higher Education), Fauzan Adziman, PhD (Research and Development), and Prof. Ahmad Najib Burhani (Science and Technology). The Research and Development and Science and Technology Directors will focus on the industry downstream and the commercialization of research outputs. Sources from the Ministry confirm that each Director General will appoint directors for their respective directorates, with the full structure expected by February 2025. An organogram of the new structure has been provided.

The appointments of individuals with UK educational and professional backgrounds are expected to positively impact the UK sector. Over the next five years, Indonesia's higher education policy will focus on supporting the government’s development agenda, meeting presidential targets, and aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Key priorities include developing skilled science talent, enhancing higher education institutions' capacities, and strengthening the R&D ecosystem.

UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) may gain more opportunities to engage with Indonesia's Ministry on mobility, scholarships, partnerships, and research, thanks to the new Director Generals' UK connections. UK universities are encouraged to highlight these ties when working with Indonesian stakeholders, showcasing how UK HEIs can support Indonesia’s higher education goals. As Indonesia advances its higher education policy, collaboration with international partners will be crucial in achieving the ambitious goals, fostering innovation, and developing a skilled workforce.
