The University of Evansville (UE) is a private institution located in Indiana, with a history dating back to 1854. The university is dedicated to delivering a transformative education, emphasizing international experiences through its renowned study abroad program at Harlaxton College in England, which is ranked as the top program in the nation. UE offers over 80 majors and areas of study, attracting a diverse student body from 55 countries and 44 states. The university fosters a supportive and inclusive environment, encouraging students to think critically, act courageously, serve responsibly, and live with purpose.
A delegation of ten final-year IRPH students, accompanied by Dr. Sam Edwards, participated in an academic symposium at Harlaxton College, the UK campus of the University of Evansville. This event was part of a series commemorating the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s birth and celebrating the origins of the ‘special relationship’ between Britain and the United States.
The symposium featured notable speakers, including the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy, as well as senior academics, diplomats, and military officers from both the UK and the US. The students enrolled in the module titled ‘Special Relationship? Anglo-American Relations since 1900,’ actively engaged with the speakers. This unique opportunity deepened their understanding of the history and politics of US-UK relations, offering valuable networking opportunities and allowing for real-world applications of their studies.
In addition to the symposium, the students visited a Churchill exhibition showcasing one of the largest private collections of Churchill memorabilia in the country, currently on loan to Harlaxton. They also had the chance to tour the historic house and its grounds. The Loughborough delegation was invited by Dr. Holly Carter, Dean of Harlaxton College.
