Tennessee University Joins Elite Ranks: Named to Forbes' New Generation Ivy League List

150-year-old Vanderbilt University is listed by Forbes as its next-generation Ivy League College. Founded in 1873, Vanderbilt is commemorating the people, places, and programs that make up its rich history. The conventional Ivy Leagues were criticized over admissions processes, grade inflation, and campus demonstrations, in this response Forbes has compiled a new list of ten public and ten private universities in a total of 20 prominent universities known as New Ivies. These colleges are well known for producing highly desirable graduates who match the needs of companies.

The Ivy League currently comprises eight prestigious universities which are Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Yale. Other famous universities, such as the University of Chicago, Stanford, MIT, and Duke, have similar prestige but are not part of this elite group. Forbes assessed 1,742 colleges and institutions with at least 4,000 students using admissions data and standardized test scores to prepare a new list. In this New Ivy League list, Private institutions required an admissions rate of less than 20%, whereas public universities required a rate of less than 50%.
 

Public Universities:
 

  • Binghamton University, located in Binghamton, New York, has an acceptance rate of 42% and a substantial undergraduate enrollment of 14,752 students. The median SAT score for its students is 1430, while the median ACT score is 31.
  • Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, has a highly selective acceptance rate of 17%. It serves 16,183 undergraduates with median SAT and ACT scores of 1480 and 33, respectively.
  • The University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, has a 23% acceptance rate and a large undergraduate population of 39,951. Its students have a median SAT score of 1390 and an ACT score of 31.
  • The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Illinois, accepts 45% of its applicants and has 34,354 students. The median SAT score is 1440, and the median ACT score is 32.
  • The University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, also has a 45% acceptance rate and enrolls 28,883 undergraduates. Students here have median SAT and ACT scores of 1460 and 33.
  • The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has an 18% acceptance rate and a student body of 31,693. The median SAT score is 1470, with a median ACT score of 33.
  • The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, admits 17% of applicants and has 19,215 students. Median SAT and ACT scores are 1460 and 32.
  • The University of Texas in Austin, Texas, accepts 31% of its applicants and has a large undergraduate population of 39,552. The median SAT score is 1370, and the median ACT score is 30.
  • The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, has a 19% acceptance rate and 17,122 students, with median SAT and ACT scores of 1490 and 33.
  • The University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wisconsin, has a 49% acceptance rate and enrolls 33,068 students. Its median SAT and ACT scores are 1430 and 29.

 

Private Universities:
 

  • Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, has a 17% acceptance rate and an undergraduate population of 9,964. Its median SAT score is 1490, and the median ACT score is 34.
  • Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is highly selective with an 11% acceptance rate and 6,816 undergraduates. Students have a median SAT score of 1540 and an ACT score of 35.
  • Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, also has an 11% acceptance rate and a student body of 7,338. The median SAT score is 1500, and the ACT score is 33.
  • Georgetown University in Washington D.C. has a 12% acceptance rate and 7,306 undergraduates. Its students score a median SAT of 1500 and a median ACT of 34.
  • Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, has a highly selective 7% acceptance rate and enrolls 5,850 students. The median SAT score is 1550, with an ACT score of 35.
  • Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, also has a 7% acceptance rate and a student population of 8,652. Median SAT and ACT scores are 1530 and 34.
  • Rice University in Houston, Texas, admits 9% of applicants and has 4,229 students. The median SAT score is 1540, with a median ACT score of 35.
  • The University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, has a 13% acceptance rate and 9,049 undergraduates. Its students have median SAT and ACT scores of 1510 and 34.
  • The University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, has a 12% acceptance rate and an undergraduate population of 21,154. Its median SAT and ACT scores are 1520 and 34
  • Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, has a selective 7% acceptance rate and an undergraduate enrollment of 7,109. The median SAT score is 1530, with a median ACT score of 35.
