University of Tokyo and JKUAT Strengthen Ties with Focus on Joint Research

The Vice Chancellor of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, recently welcomed a distinguished delegation from the University of Tokyo, led by Prof. Takao Someya, a globally recognized expert in flexible electronics and bio-integrated systems, was accompanied by Mr. Toshiyuki Nakamura, Special Assistant to the President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The visit aimed to strengthen international research collaboration between the two institutions.

Both experts discussed joint research initiatives in several key areas, including health monitoring technologies, climate change and environmental sustainability, start-ups, artificial intelligence, and agricultural innovation. In particular, JKUAT students and faculty will collaborate with researchers from the University of Tokyo on advanced technologies, such as flexible sensors and electronic materials capable of monitoring health markers directly from the skin.

Prof. Ngumi expressed her enthusiasm about collaborating with one of the world’s top research institutions, noting that such a partnership could have a transformative impact on advancing science and technology. This collaboration would undoubtedly bring invaluable expertise and new opportunities for students and researchers at JKUAT. Furthermore, the university fosters a culture in which researchers are encouraged to pursue ambitious proposals, and this international collaboration would further enhance its research capacity.

The university's professors are committed to conducting quality research and guiding students on research methodologies. In this regard, internationalization and collaboration are vital to the university’s growth and success in the global academic community. Furthermore, Prof. Ngumi proposed student and staff exchange programs as a key area for mutual growth, which would help develop deeper research collaborations between the two institutions. At the same time, Prof. Someya acknowledged that rapidly advancing technology and research are crucial to Africa’s scientific development and recognized JKUAT’s remarkable leadership in agricultural and technological advancements across the continent. He observed a natural synergy between the two universities, particularly in agricultural technology, business development, and environmental sustainability.

The University of Tokyo has hosted many African students through exchange programs, and Prof. Someya expressed his hope that the collaborations with start-ups and his area of expertise could contribute significantly to Africa’s growth and development. Mr. Nakamura, representing JICA, reinforced the importance of academic and scientific collaborations in advancing shared goals between institutions and nations.

In a demonstration of reciprocity, both institutions committed to advancing the proposed collaboration. Prof. Ngumi extended an invitation to researchers from the University of Tokyo to engage with the JKUAT academic community, while Prof. Someya invited Kenyan scholars and researchers to participate in exchange programs at the University of Tokyo. To formalize their partnership, the two universities agreed to draft a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which will serve to solidify their mutual goals and objectives. Overall, the visit from the University of Tokyo to JKUAT marks the beginning of a promising collaboration focused on joint research in areas like health technology, climate change, and agricultural innovation.
