From Mumbai Slum to IIT Delhi: Abhishek Sujit Sharma scored AIR 2456 in JEE advance

Abhishek Sujit Sharma living in Mumbai's Lokmanya Tilak Nagar slum steeped in the esteemed halls of IIT Delhi, his journey embodies the extraordinary power of determination and hope. He achieved an incredible feat by obtaining admission to IIT Delhi after completing the JEE Advanced exam with an All India score of 2456 and an OBC NCL score of 415 and became the first IITian from his slum.

Along with being determined to improve his family’s living conditions and escape the cycle of poverty, he continued his studies despite the noisy environment and using a neighbour’s Wi-Fi connection on a terrace. His father, a worker at a steel fabrication firm, supports the family of four in a cramped rented apartment in Harad Chawl, where difficulties including robbery, substance misuse, and inadequate utilities, such as communal toilets, presented constant challenges.

Despite that, the young man remained focused on his studies, avoiding all distractions, only reflecting on how much his family sacrificed for him. Despite the difficult conditions, his parents kept encouraging him and never doubted his potential. In a video by Physics Wallah, Abhishek's mother shared their challenging journey and his relentless dedication to JEE preparation, which received widespread appreciation, amassing 8.1 million views and 693,000 likes on Instagram.

Abhishek Sujit Sharma wanted to be a scientist and succeed in physics since he was a child. When he discovered Physics Wallah's cheap online preparation classes, his life changed dramatically. Abhishek observed that these programs, including the Arjuna and Lakshya batches, provided a comprehensive cover of the JEE syllabus, as well as regular examinations and question-and-answer sessions, adding to be a crucial step to his success. He cited the mentorship as a major component in his success and said he experienced a transforming event when he met Alakh Pandey in person and expressed thanks to Pandey for the Rs 6 lakh scholarship, which considerably reduced his family's financial burden and allowed him to focus solely on his education.
