A study by the American Psychological Association (APA) revealed that academic pressure can cause stress in preschool-aged children, leading to increased anxiety and behavioural issues. Similarly, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) reported that excessive academic pressure negatively impacts social and emotional development, highlighting the importance of play-based learning for young children’s well-being.
Recognizing these concerns and prioritizing students' mental health, Kerala's General Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, announced a ban on entrance tests for Class 1 admissions in certain schools. This decision aims to protect young children from unnecessary academic pressure, particularly as discussions continue regarding the necessity of examinations for first-grade students. During a program on February 16th, Minister Sivankutty revealed that some schools were conducting entrance tests and interviews for Class 1 admissions. He made it clear that such practices would no longer be allowed, emphasizing the need to ensure that children are not subjected to undue stress at such an early stage in their education.
In addition, the minister addressed recent incidents of ragging in schools, acknowledging that while these were isolated events, they had harmed the state’s reputation. He assured that measures would be implemented to prevent such practices in the future, reaffirming the state’s commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive educational environment for all students.
