High School Students to Tackle Real-World Problems at KU Engineering Design Competition

Engineering Solutions for Tomorrow: KU's Annual STEM Event Challenges High School Students

The University of Kansas School of Engineering will host the annual High School Design Competition where high school students from across the region participate to build a brighter future in engineering. The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 23 at the engineering complex on KU’s Lawrence campus and the registration deadline is October 7.

The students will actively participate in developing innovative engineering solutions to address real-world problems. Scholarships will be awarded to the winning teams from six engineering disciplines, allowing them to pursue degrees at KU. According to Andrew Reyes, a junior in computer science and outreach co-lead for the 2024 competition, the event highlights KU’s dedication to advancing STEM education and nurturing future engineering leaders and innovators.

Although the event is completely focused on high school students, it also florishes students with valuable experience in leadership and project management in the Self Engineering Leadership Fellows (SELF) Program. Students will be responsible for organizing the event by being involved in this program and working alongside KU faculty and industry professionals to create a dynamic and unique educational experience for everyone involved.

This event will encourage students to think beyond mere speed and innovation focusing on better engineering solutions for pressing medical, industrial, and environmental challenges, such as improving water filtration systems and advancing the structural design of skyscrapers, and eventually will contribute to a more sustainable and improved future. Participants will explore a range of disciplines, including geometry, mathematics, physics, design, entrepreneurship, budgeting, project management, and presentation skills and will be guided through a panel of industry experts who will evaluate all the projects and offer critical feedback to refine student's ideas.

Attendees, including students, educators, parents, and advisers, will have the chance to engage with industry sponsors, KU faculty, and SELF Fellows, gaining valuable insights into the engineering field and potential career paths. To get the complete details about the competition students can visit the official website or reach out to highschooldesign@ku.edu.

Editor’s Note:

The High School Design Competition organized by  The University of Kansas School of Engineering is a testament to the university’s dedication to encouraging students to think innovatively and be a part of solutions to real-world problems. This event focused on the urgent need to address the medical, environmental, and industrial challenges and look for the best possible solutions through engineering. Focusing on sustainability and practical problem-solving, the competition aims to inspire the next generation of engineers while connecting them with industry experts and educational resources.

Skoobuzz hopes that through this event students will learn the real purpose of their education: to contribute to making the world better for all.
