Global Observatory Supports Gender Equality in Sports, Partnered Loughborough University

Loughborough University Joins Forces with Global Observatory to Drive Sport Gender Equality

Loughborough University has partnered with The Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport (GO) to advance women’s sports and gender equality. The GO was established to remove gender discrimination and empower women and girls in physical education, activity, and sport. The initiative originated from Loughborough University’s UNESCO Chair in Sport, Physical Activity, and Education. The University, through its School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the GO to collaborate on global research and innovation for gender equality in sport. As the first UK-based university to partner with the GO, the university will build on its successful Health and Wellbeing of Women in Sport cluster.

Dr Emma Pullen expressed enthusiasm for the MOU, stating that this collaboration will make a meaningful contribution towards women's and girls’ sports. She highlighted the importance of advancing global knowledge, policy, and practice, and stressed the need for coordinated action to address systemic gender inequities in sport. Dr Lombe Mwambwa from the GO remarked that the timing of the partnership aligns perfectly with the ongoing action and research efforts worldwide. This partnership is a strategic opportunity to mutually enhance both organizations’ excellence and influence, supporting their shared policy, practice, and research goals.

Professor Jo Maher, the University's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Sport, noted that this partnership marks another step forward in expanding and evolving the university’s research and innovation in women's and girls’ sports. She expressed enthusiasm about working alongside talented colleagues at the GO to deliver world-leading projects with tangible benefits for all involved. This partnership between Loughborough University and the Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport by combining expertise and resources will drive global change, enhance research and innovation, and create tangible benefits for women and girls in sport worldwide.

Editor's Note:

Despite increased participation, women in sports still face obstacles like gender norms, limited resources, and socio-economic barriers. Programs promoting sports for women have proven impactful in changing these dynamics. The partnership between Loughborough University and The Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport aims to advance gender equality in sport through research, innovation, and policy change. As the first UK university to partner with the GO, Loughborough is setting an example in tackling gender inequities and creating lasting impact worldwide.

Skoobuzz encourages universities globally to join the initiative in improving women’s participation in sports, ensuring equal opportunities, resources, and support for female athletes.
