Melbourne Global Centre in Delhi: A Gateway to Educational Partnerships

The University of Melbourne’s first Global Centre in Delhi was officially opened by the Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan MP, marking a significant expansion of its global presence. This milestone is being celebrated as part of a major delegation visiting India to enhance partnerships and engagement with local students, alumni, government officials, and educational partners.

The MGC is strategically positioned near businesses, international agencies, and the Australian High Commission. This Centre will serve as a hub for collaboration and knowledge exchange across education, research, industry, and the community by serving as the University’s central hub in India. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Wesley, joined a group of university leaders, supporters, and government officials to highlight the significance of this new initiative. This new centre is a testament to the University’s commitment to promoting educational collaboration, empowering and enhancing India’s capacity to align with the university’s mission to benefit society through education and research.

The Centre will showcase the University’s wide range of educational programs, innovative research, and community engagement initiatives. It will host cultural performances, art exhibitions, and lecture series, providing a platform to connect research with Indian corporations, industry partners, and academic institutions. The opening event was a vibrant gathering of students, alumni, academics, and distinguished guests, including representatives from both the Indian and Australian governments. Victorian Premier, Allan highlighted that the University is Australia’s top-ranked university, and this new center in Delhi will create exciting opportunities for cooperation and networking in India.

The “Advancing Melbourne Globally” strategy was launched in 2024 which aimed to develop a network of Global Centers in key partner countries across Asia and the Pacific also committed to becoming a knowledge hub since these are the world's most dynamic regions, as emphasized by Professor Wesley. The new center in Delhi is an example of its partnership model in India, focusing on fostering capacity and collaboration through mutually beneficial relationships that address the region’s educational needs. The Melbourne Global Centre is not intended for teaching or functioning as an offshore campus. Instead, it aims to enhance existing and future initiatives in India for a more sustainable impact, following the university's partnership model and guided by input from Indian governments and institutions.

As the University deepens its connections in India, the newly launched Centre in Delhi signifies a strong commitment to supporting India’s long-term academic and research goals. Serving as a centralized hub for collaboration, the Centre is expected to establish foundations for future generations of scholars and researchers. This will develop new bilateral connections and facilitate meaningful educational and cultural exchanges in the future.
