Workers Want AI Benefits But Upskilling Must Be a Priority A MIT Study

Whether the increasing influence of AI in every sector is taking away employment opportunities or providing new options for work, is a matter of debate. While the fear of being replaced by automation is common among employees, many surprisingly view it as an opportunity for growth. A Recent paper and survey from MIT revealed that 60% of workers involved with robotics and AI believed that these technologies will positively impact their careers, enhancing productivity, job satisfaction, and safety.
The survey was conducted with over 9200 office employees across nine European countries, the United States, and Australia. The paper was designed and published by MIT, funded by Amazon, and carried out by Ipsos and underscored the anticipated benefits for more employees from new technologies such as robotics and AI regarding their safety, comfort at work, pay, and job autonomy rather than potential drawbacks. It highlighted that employees engaged in complex problem-solving, those who feel appreciated by their employers, and individuals motivated to advance in their careers are more likely to perceive these technologies as advantageous. Only 28% of Americans believed that AI is helpful in their daily lives and found it trustworthy. However, over 60% of American workers felt that employers should focus on upskilling their employees with new technologies. Additionally, 46% of workers overall expressed a desire for employers to adopt tools that can automate mundane tasks, emphasizing tasks rather than entire occupations.
Ben Armstrong, the executive director of MIT’s Industrial Performance Center, shared that the study aimed to explore how workers view technological change and what affects their willingness to use technology at work. He was surprised by the optimism workers showed about automation improving their safety, comfort, and career growth. The key finding was that employees who are happy and feel valued at work, as well as those eager to learn, see the most potential benefits of automation in their jobs.
The paper highlighted that the impact of AI in the workplace is more complex than many think. While workers may fear being replaced, many also recognize the benefits of using these technologies. The data showed that employees aiming for career growth, especially by using AI to improve their performance, are likely to gain the most. Additionally, organizations that promote innovation are encouraged to apply for the Most Innovative Companies Awards, with the deadline on Friday, October 4.
