CBSE’s National Adolescent Summit: A Step Towards Supporting Students’ Mental Health and Well-being

Addressing Mental Health: CBSE Summit Promotes Holistic Development for Students

In today's fast-paced world, the significance of mental health in education cannot be overstated. Recognizing this, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) hosted the National Adolescent Summit 2024 on December 20-21 at the National Bal Bhawan, New Delhi. With over 850 participants, the two-day event focused on "Life Skills, Mental Health, Safety, and Well-being," addressing key adolescent issues. The summit aimed to empower students and educators, supporting the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s goal of holistic development.

The event was inaugurated on December 20, 2024, by Rahul Singh, the CBSE Chairman, who highlighted the transformative nature of adolescence and stressed the importance of an education that goes beyond the traditional curriculum. He motivated students to participate actively and allowed their talents and voices to be heard. Himanshu Gupta, the CBSE Secretary, underlined the challenges faced by modern students, such as information overload and changing family dynamics. He emphasized the need for robust counselling systems in schools to address mental health issues and create inclusive learning environments. Additionally, the National Health and Wellness Quiz stole the show, attracting significant participation. The summit also included panel discussions, workshops for counsellors and wellness teachers, and interactive sessions addressing various adolescent issues.

The following day, the summit concluded with a valedictory ceremony, where Rajat Sharma, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of India TV, was the special guest. He highlighted the dangers of misinformation and cybercrimes, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking and ethical media practices. Sharma also underscored the value of initiatives like the Prime Minister's Pariksha Pe Charcha.

The event concluded with awards being presented to the competition winners, followed by a collective pledge from all participants to prioritize student well-being, strengthen mental health initiatives, and foster inclusive school environments. The event successfully reaffirmed CBSE’s commitment to empowering students through innovative programs, counselling systems, and partnerships with families and communities.

Editor’s Note:

Adolescents, in particular, face various pressures—academic, social, and personal that can significantly impact their mental well-being. Addressing these challenges is essential for nurturing well-rounded, resilient individuals who are equipped to navigate the complexities of modern life. The National Adolescent Summit 2024, hosted by CBSE, played a key role in bringing these discussions to the forefront. The summit emphasized the importance of mental health awareness in schools and the need to integrate mental health initiatives into the educational framework. It delivered a crucial message to society, educators, and parents that mental health is just as important as academic achievement in shaping the future of students. The event offered students valuable insights from experts, teaching them how to cope when life presents challenges. It also reinforced the significance of inclusive education and creating supportive learning environments, which are critical for fostering a healthier and more holistic educational system.

Skoobuzz is grateful to CBSE for organizing such an insightful event and encourages all parents and educators to work together in preparing a generation that is mentally and physically healthy, enabling them to flourish without undue burden and reach their full potential.
