HAM Radio’s Crucial Role in Communication and Disaster Management at HAMFEST INDIA

National Amateur Radio Convention HAMFEST India to be Held at SNU, Organized by OSCAR India

Kolkata will host the prestigious HAMFEST INDIA, the national amateur radio convention, at Sister Nivedita University on December 14 and 15. This marks the third time in 33 years that the City of Joy has been selected for the event. Organized under the guidance of IAS S. Suresh Kumar, Chairman of HAMFEST INDIA, and led by OSCAR INDIA in collaboration with Sister Nivedita University, the event promises to be a significant occasion for the HAM radio community. Bengal, home to India’s first licensed HAM, Amarendra Chandra Gooptu (2JK), who obtained his license in 1921, holds a special place in the history of amateur radio. In celebration of 103 years of HAM radio, HAMFEST INDIA is being hosted where it all began, said Nilkantha Chatterjee, the event’s Convenor.

HAMFEST 2024 will be a landmark event for the HAM radio community. It will feature a distinguished Advisory Board that includes experts such as Brigadier Jaideep Chanda, Shri Onkarnath Yadav, Director of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), and veteran HAM Praveen Valera. In 2024, the event will highlight the global HAM radio community, with participation from more than 16 Indian states and international delegates from countries like Dubai, the USA, Nepal, Oman, and Germany. The board reflects the event's global appeal.

Official representatives from various key organizations, including the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the India Meteorological Department (IMD), and the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), are also set to attend, further emphasizing the importance of this year’s HAMFEST INDIA. HAMFEST INDIA 2024 will be a major event for the HAM radio community. It will celebrate over 100 years of amateur radio in India and highlight HAM radio’s important role in disaster management and communication. It’s sure to be an exciting and memorable occasion for everyone involved.
