Northland employees and alumni seek more time to raise funds as the college faces closure

Urgent Fundraising Efforts Underway as College Seeks $12 Million to Prevent Shutdown

Northland College is struggling financially to continue operations and unless it can raise $12 million by April 3 it is at risk of closing down. Alumni, staff, and local community members are attempting their best to raise the funding, however, they have requested a deadline extension of about six months since that would be a more realistic one to consider. The college board is trying its best to keep potential and current students updated about the situation before the next academic year commences.

The college has started discussions with community members and staff to come up with a strategy named True Northland to explore measures such as increasing focus on community initiatives, building rentals, and focusing on research to ensure the college’s survival. Declining student enrollment and insufficient student funds have made it operate at a loss since 2016, filtering out its savings which are at an end. The board wants to explore new ideas to help use college facilities pertaining to social justice and climate change. Along with this former students have also given their contribution by forming a group named Northland Forever reaching out to environmentalists and celebrities to raise awareness about the financial challenges Northland is facing and has secured pledges totaling $114,000.

Apart from this many individuals even chose to rally to prevent Northland’s closure since the current students were taken aback by the announcement. Many students have chosen to stay while others are leaving for alternative colleges. Supporters of this cause believe that Northland is worth saving and share their views through videos on social media.

Editor's note:

The situation that has been faced by Northland College shows how difficult it is for schools to survive right now. But also paints a beautiful picture of trust that stays in the hearts of the people associated with it and they try their best to bring it out of unforeseen circumstances. Skoobuzz appreciates this sense of community among people of the community, alumni, and students and encourages individuals to support such causes that they are associated with or wish to be a part of.
