Oxford’s Legacy Continues: Leading Billionaire-Producing University in Britain

Top UK Universities Produce Billionaires, With Oxford Leading the Pack

The University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world, has been ranked as the leading billionaire-producing university in Britain. Oxford outperforms other institutions in terms of producing billionaires, including Ivy League schools, which no longer guarantee six-figure salaries for their graduates. Research by Edumentors, analyzing Forbes' list of global billionaires, found that Oxford University has produced 10 billionaires with a combined wealth of $47.1 billion. Notable alumni include Alex Beard and Sir Michael Jonathan Moritz.

Beard, one of Britain’s youngest billionaires with a net worth of $1.8 billion, graduated from Oxford in 1989. He worked at BP, rose to CEO at Glencore, and later founded Adaptogen Capital. Oxford alumni like Moritz, with a net worth of $6.8 billion, made fortunes by investing in companies like Google, LinkedIn, and PayPal. While Emma Watson and Hugh Grant are also notable graduates, they are not billionaires. Although Oxford has produced more billionaires, Cambridge outpaces it in wealth, with $92.6 billion—$45.5 billion more than Oxford’s $47.1 billion. Tornike Asatiani, CEO of Edumentors, noted that despite having two fewer billionaires, Cambridge’s wealthiest alumni have accumulated wealth comparable to Stanford's richest, despite 12 fewer billionaires.

Forbes' June 2024 list of top colleges for billionaires highlighted Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania, which produced 28 and 36 billionaires, respectively. In comparison, Edumentors ranked Oxford as the top billionaire-producing university in Britain, with 10 billionaires and a combined wealth of $47.1 billion. Cambridge ranked second, surpassing Oxford in wealth with $92.6 billion, despite having two fewer billionaires. The London School of Economics followed in third with 8 billionaires and $37.8 billion in wealth. The University of London ranked fourth with 4 billionaires and $9.6 billion, while the London Business School placed fifth with 3 billionaires and $23.1 billion.

Forbes ranked the University of Pennsylvania as the top billionaire-producing university in America, with 36 billionaires and $367 billion in wealth. Stanford followed with 30 billionaires and $90 billion, while Harvard ranked third with 28 billionaires and $261 billion. Yale produced 19 billionaires, totalling $149 billion, and Cornell ranked fifth with 13 billionaires and $60.4 billion. The University of Oxford’s strong record of producing billionaires highlights its lasting influence and prestige in higher education. This study shows the important role these top universities play in shaping future leaders and innovators, reinforcing their status as centres of excellence.
