New 'Statement' Building Proposed for Salford University's Acoustics Centre

Transformational £2.5 Billion Salford Crescent Project Moves Forward

The first phase of a £2.5 billion masterplan to transform Salford, Greater Manchester, has been submitted for approval. A new "statement" building is planned for a site formerly housing an industrial unit north of Strawberry Hill, near Peel Park. As part of the Salford Crescent masterplan, the proposed building will house Salford University's acoustics centre, which has supported leading companies like Dyson and Universal Music Mastering Studios with its research.

Salford Mayor Paul Dennett emphasized that the new building would improve connections between local communities, the Crescent area, and the university campus. According to planning documents, this project will be the first to be developed as part of the Salford Crescent masterplan, which is situated just 1.5 miles from Manchester city centre and MediaCity. To the north of the proposed acoustics facility, plans are in place for a "Collision Building," designed to provide additional shared workspaces and facilities.

The wider Salford Crescent project, developed by the English Cities Fund, Salford University, and Salford Council, will include 3,000 new homes, offices, and a new pedestrian and cycling bridge. Construction on the Salford Rise bridge began in November, with completion expected by summer 2026. The bridge will be 220 meters (721 feet) long and 11 meters (36 feet) wide, connecting the university buildings across Frederick Road. In addition, Salford Crescent train station will see upgrades, including the construction of a third platform this year and a £10 million renovation of Salford Central station.

The Salford Crescent masterplan promises to significantly transform the area, enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth through new infrastructure and development.
