Australian Partnership Fuels New National Security Program at SINU

The Solomon Islands National University (SINU), founded in 2012, is renowned for its quality education and applied research. It has a selective admission policy to maintain high academic standards. On December 16, 2024, SINU launched a new Australian government-backed course on national security under the Solomon Islands-Australia Partnership, set to begin in 2025. The course aims to strengthen the Solomon Islands' capacity to produce high-quality analytical writing and teaching on national security, according to the Australian High Commission. Minister of Police, National Security, and Correctional Services, Jimson Tanangada, emphasized the importance of national security to sovereignty and the need for such a course in an "increasingly unpredictable world."

Australia's top diplomat, Rod Hilton, noted that the initiative will allow Solomon Islands to share its security narrative with the Pacific, created by Solomon Islanders for Solomon Islanders. Hilton expressed Australia's pride in partnering with SINU and stressed the need to listen to the country's academics and security professionals. The course will offer tailored national security programs, study tours, and exchanges between SINU and Australian universities.

The new national security course at SINU is an important step for the Solomon Islands to strengthen its ability to address security issues.
