Columbia University Protests Highlight Impact of Visa Revocations

Columbia University recently became the site of student demonstrations following the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil in New York City. As part of the protest, several students chained themselves to the gates of St. Paul’s Chapel, expressing their solidarity and opposition to the incident.

This protest occurred against the backdrop of a broader crackdown on international students under the Trump administration. The government implemented stringent measures, including revoking entry visas and ordering some students to leave the country. These actions have raised widespread concerns among U.S. colleges, many of which criticized the administration for using vague justifications and adopting new tactics to expel foreign students. Institutions have voiced alarm over the potential impact of these policies on academic freedom and campus diversity.

The Trump administration’s approach marked a significant departure from past practices, as several international students were targeted for expressing pro-Palestinian views and were ordered to leave immediately. Edward Inch, president of Minnesota State University, reported that five students had their visas revoked following a status check in the university’s database, which was triggered by the detention of a Turkish student at the University of Minnesota. Inch described these developments as unprecedented, while Miriam Feldblum, CEO of the Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, noted that such sudden actions were unlike anything institutions had previously encountered.

Reports indicated that federal agencies bypassed universities and removed student records without consultation. Previously, students whose visas were revoked could remain in the U.S. if they maintained legal status, but the new measures have resulted in more students losing their status and facing the risk of arrest. For instance, two Saudi students at North Carolina State University had their student status revoked and left the U.S., while the university assisted them in continuing their studies remotely. Similarly, Ranjani Srinivasan, a Fulbright recipient at Columbia University, fled to Canada after her visa was revoked.

These actions were reportedly carried out under a little-known law allowing the government to remove foreign nationals deemed to pose "serious adverse foreign policy consequences." Trump invoked this provision in a January executive order targeting antisemitism on college campuses. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the administration’s actions, citing the Immigration and Nationality Act, which permits the expulsion of foreigners deemed a foreign policy threat. Rubio disclosed that over 300 student visas had been revoked, with new revocations occurring daily, although he did not specify how many were linked to protests or Palestinian support.

Education experts have warned that the uncertainty surrounding these policies could harm the U.S.’s reputation as a leading destination for international students. Fanta Aw, CEO of NAFSA, cautioned that the current climate might drive students to seek education abroad, potentially causing lasting damage to the global perception of U.S. higher education.
