Empowering Disadvantaged Students: Swansea University's AI Research Scheme

Swansea University’s computer science department has launched an empowering initiative this summer, offering undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) research. This innovative scheme is meticulously designed to prepare students for a future in research by providing access to expert talks, immersive sessions in data science, and the invaluable chance to undertake a supervised research project. At the culmination of the program, students will proudly present their findings, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey.

Running from June 9 to August 1, the program offers accommodation at Swansea University’s Bay campus and a stipend of £400 per week for a 35-hour workweek. Spearheaded by the Computer Science department and supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering, Google DeepMind, and the Hg Foundation, the scheme targets UK undergraduates in computer science or AI-related fields from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Interested applicants can learn more through an online webinar on February 26, with applications due by March 14.

Participants will work at the £32.5 million Computational Foundry at Swansea University’s Bay Campus, a hub known for research in computational and mathematical sciences. The program covers areas such as human-centred AI, machine learning, AI security, artificial and biological cognition, computational intelligence, and robotics. The scheme is co-led by Dr. Rahat and Dr. Venn-Wycherly from the Computer Science department.

This program offers undergraduates from disadvantaged backgrounds across the UK a valuable opportunity to gain experience in AI research.
