Accomplishing the Dream to be a Musician: Oishik Mandal’s Story

The story of Oishik Mandal, an Indian teenager who moved to the UK three years ago, is one of determination and passion for music which is so deeply rooted that Oishik convinced his parents to relocate to Milton Keynes so he could pursue his dream of studying music. Oishik faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic to adapt to the new educational system but he committed to work hard for 8 months to prepare for GCSE exams. His hard work paid off and he cleared his GCSE exam even though the curriculum of the exam differed widely from that of Indian Schools.

After clearing the GCSE exam, Oishik concentrated on his A levels in Mathematics, Physics, and Music. His passion for music was rooted in the training he got in Indian Classical music at the age of two and it eventually led him to choose music as his major subject at university. Although initially, he faced the financial burden of being considered an international student at King's College due to visa conditions, which he overcame by securing a full scholarship from the Royal College of Music. King’s College grants a full scholarship to only one student in each subject and Oishik was the one that was granted this in music. This scholarship not only recognizes his personal achievement but also celebrates the art of music itself.

Oishik composed music in his free time and recorded his music at the studio he had in his house. He has also performed at the prestigious Gloucester Cathedral and his journey is one of determination, passion, and perseverance, inspiring thousands of young musicians.
