Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: TUHH and UCC Collaborate on Climate Research

Global Partnership: TUHH and UCC Unite to Tackle Climate Change

The Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana signed a five-year "Memorandum of Understanding" to strengthen their cooperation on October 8, 2024. This partnership aims to enhance climate research and foster synergies for sustainable solutions. The agreement was formalized during a delegation visit to Ghana led by Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science and Research.

Andreas Timm-Giel, President of TUHH, emphasized that climate change knows no national borders. The university is committed to collaborating with partners to connect and train the brightest minds for a better world. Aligning with TUHH's motto, "Engineering to Face Climate Change," the university is committed to making a change in climatic situations by focusing on developing innovative engineering solutions.

Ghanaian universities play a crucial role in addressing global challenges alongside TUHH. Katharina Fegebank, the Senator for Science and Research, emphasized that collaboration is essential for developing solutions to climate change and creating sustainable strategies and technologies for environmental protection. To support this initiative, TUHH will offer five scholarships for African students, as well as travel grants, to facilitate attendance at conferences and conduct research. This partnership aims to strengthen efforts in tackling pressing environmental issues through shared knowledge and resources.

The collaboration is part of TUHH's broader commitment to climate protection and enhancing the inclusion of the Global South. Recently, TUHH established Europe's first United Nations University (UNU) Hub on "Engineering to Face Climate Change" which served as a central point for active exchanges and collaborations between TUHH and UNU. This hub is connected to the Institute for Natural Resources in Africa at the UNU in Accra. As a result of this collaboration, TUHH will offer two additional doctoral scholarships specifically for students from the Global South.

Editor's Note:

The recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana marks a pivotal step in the global effort to combat climate change. This partnership emphasizes the vital importance of international collaboration in creating sustainable solutions for urgent environmental challenges. By offering scholarships and travel grants, TUHH is investing in the next generation of leaders in climate engineering while strengthening ties between the Global North and South. The establishment of Europe’s first United Nations University Hub dedicated to "Engineering to Face Climate Change" further reflects TUHH's commitment to fostering impactful, long-term solutions.
