Türkiye's Higher Education Institutions Make Strong Mark in URAP Rankings

Türkiye has recently reached its highest point in the past five years, making a strong mark in the global academic world. One significant achievement has been the inclusion of 126 Turkish universities in the respected "world's top 3,000 universities" ranking. This esteemed ranking is created by the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Research Laboratory at the Middle East Technical University (METU). This accomplishment highlights Türkiye's dedication to improving education and its ongoing efforts to gain recognition worldwide.

The URAP ranking, one of the 11 official organizations that globally rank higher education institutions, highlights Türkiye's growing presence. This ranking considers six indicators: the number of articles, the number of citations, the total number of scientific documents, publication impact, citation impact, and international collaboration.

In the latest rankings, 11 Turkish universities ranked in the top 1,000, 18 in the 1,001-1,500 range, 26 in the 1,501-2,000 range, 37 in the 2,001-2,500 range, and 34 in the 2,501-3,000 range. This brings the total to 126 Turkish universities in the global top 3,000. In recent years, Türkiye had 111 universities in 2020, 112 in 2021, 118 in 2022, and 119 in 2023. With 126 universities this year, Türkiye has achieved its highest ranking in five years. Among the top-ranked Turkish universities, Hacettepe University was placed 573rd, Istanbul Technical University 712th, Ankara University 760th, Istanbul University 813th, Koç University 862nd, Middle East Technical University 881st, Gazi University 886th, Ege University 903rd, Atatürk University 921st, Near East University 977th, and Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa 985th.

Regarding the world's top universities, the URAP ranking placed Harvard University in the U.S. at the top. Paris Cite University in France followed in second place, while the University of Toronto in Canada secured third place. Other universities in the top 10 included College London University in the U.K. (4th), Zhejiang University in China (5th), Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China (6th), Tsinghua University in China (7th), Oxford University in the U.K. (8th), Stanford University in the U.S. (9th), and Peking University in China (10th). The recent achievements of Turkish universities in the URAP rankings reflect the nation's commitment to academic excellence and its growing influence in the global educational landscape.
