UAB's Research Excellence Propels It to 164th Position Globally
UAB Achieves Highest Ranking in Alabama in 2024-2025 U.S. News Global List

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) ranked in the top 6 per cent of global universities in the 2024-2025 U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities rankings, placing No. 164 out of 2,459 institutions and making it the highest-ranked school in Alabama. This marks an improvement from UAB’s previous rankings in the top 10 per cent in 2021 and the top 8 per cent in 2022.
UAB President Ray Watts said the university’s rise in rankings, with a four-percentage-point increase over four years, reflects the world-class research and scholarship of its faculty, staff, and students. He added that with the success of UAB’s research funding and the goals of "Growth with Purpose," the university's research will become more competitive and impactful, benefiting the local community, state, nation, and world. Out of 297 U.S. schools ranked, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) placed No. 57, in the top 19 percent of American universities. UAB also offers a Find Your Degree portal to help individuals discover career paths. The university ranked in the top 100 globally in seven areas within the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine.
These rankings include 35th for Surgery, 49th for Clinical Medicine, 58th for Endocrinology and Metabolism, 69th for Oncology, 71st for Immunology, 85th for Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems, and 86th for Infectious Diseases. The U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities methodology relies on data from Clarivate, using bibliometric indicators like publications, citations, and highly cited papers, rather than data from the institutions. This marks the 10th year of the rankings, with a complete list available online. The remarkable achievement solidifies UAB's position as a leader in global education and research, continuing to elevate its reputation on the world stage.
