The construction industry is a major contributor to global carbon emissions, accounting for around 37% of energy-related CO2 emissions. This is primarily due to the energy-intensive production of materials like cement, steel, and aluminum. In 2021, the sector's operational CO2 emissions reached 10 gigatonnes, marking a 5% increase from 2020. Despite efforts to improve energy efficiency, emissions have risen to an all-time high, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices and low-carbon materials to mitigate the industry's environmental impact.
The University of East London (UEL) hosted a groundbreaking Sustainability Solutions Conference, marking a significant milestone in its multi-city tour of India. This tour, aimed at fostering sustainable education, promoting innovative technologies, and strengthening collaborations between academia and industry, reflects their commitment to advancing sustainability. The India Tour 2024, a collaborative initiative with Siemens and T-Hub, represents a significant step toward advancing sustainability in higher education. This multi-city tour is designed to strengthen academic and industry collaborations, promote sustainable education, and inspire the next generation of global leaders.
Their commitment to international collaboration and recognition of India’s growing role as a global powerhouse have been key drivers behind this initiative. Through partnerships with leading Indian institutions and industry players, it seeks to bridge the gap between academia and industry, providing students with opportunities to gain practical experience and better prepare for their future careers. The tour will explore various themes, including sustainable development, technological innovation, and global citizenship. The tour will continue with a strategic roundtable on HR innovation in Hyderabad on November 19th, followed by the Women in Leadership Awards ceremony in Vadodara on November 22nd.
As part of its commitment to providing sustainable solutions to the growing ecological footprint, UEL has developed Sugarcrete, an innovative, low-carbon building material derived from sugarcane waste. This technology has the potential to reduce the construction industry’s carbon emissions. The university, in collaboration with its Indian partners, has been at the forefront of sustainable development, demonstrating the practical application of Sugarcrete by constructing an entire school using this technology. Additionally, the University reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its relationship with India, actively exploring opportunities to establish a physical presence there. Through partnerships with leading Indian institutions, UEL aims to address the increasing demand for skilled professionals and contribute to India’s ongoing research and innovation efforts.
Expert panels during the conference discussed pressing issues such as climate change, sustainable energy, and the circular economy. Renowned speakers from the university, Siemens India, and other leading organizations shared valuable insights and best practices, providing perspectives on the latest trends and challenges in the field of sustainability. Professor Amanda J. Broderick, Vice-Chancellor and President of UEL, stated that India is a key market for the University. She emphasized that the India Tour 2024 is a testament to UEL’s commitment to fostering strong partnerships and driving sustainable innovation, with the possibility of establishing a physical presence in India actively under exploration.
She further mentioned that Chennai, a vibrant hub of innovation and sustainability, was the ideal starting point for the tour. By showcasing groundbreaking solutions like Sugarcrete and collaborating with Indian institutions, UEL aims to empower the next generation of Indian leaders to tackle urgent environmental challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future.
