UEL's Collaboration with Siemens UK Prepares Students for Green Economy Careers

University of East London Aims for Net-Zero Carbon by 2030 in Strategic Partnership

The University of East London (UEL), founded in 1898, is committed to helping students build successful careers and improve social mobility. With a student body of over 40,000, representing more than 160 countries, UEL strives to create a healthier, fairer, and more sustainable world. The university has earned several accolades, including being titled the ‘University of the Year’ for Teaching Quality in the Good University Guide 2025. As part of its Vision 2028 plan, UEL is celebrating a "Year of Health" in 2025, focusing on addressing health inequalities and promoting innovation in healthcare. This includes the opening of a new Health Campus in Stratford.

On November 13, 2024, UEL, Siemens UK, and T-Hub Hyderabad co-hosted an event titled “Achieving Sustainable Higher Education: The Partnership of Industry and Universities” at T-Hub in Hyderabad. At the event, leaders from both academia and industry came together to brainstorm innovative solutions for sustainability in education. This partnership is a bold step towards building a sustainable future through its partnership with Siemens UK, working to achieve net-zero carbon emissions on its campus by 2030.

This collaboration not only contributes to UEL’s sustainability goals but also provides students with valuable opportunities to engage with sustainable technologies, develop practical skills, and gain industry experience. Siemens UK is supporting UEL’s mission to become a leading hub for sustainability education and innovation, driving positive change for future generations. The event began with opening remarks from Professor Paul Marshall, Vice President (Global Campus) and Pro Vice Chancellor of Careers and Enterprise at UEL, and Dr. Gulnara Stover, Director of UEL Global Campus. They reviewed the progress of the UEL-Siemens partnership and discussed how higher education can help shape the next generation of sustainability leaders. Their speeches emphasized the critical role that both academia and industry play in driving sustainable initiatives.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of UEL's efforts to collaborate with industry partners in both the UK and India. This included the unveiling of its new India Industry Advisory Board, aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries. Case studies showcased successful collaborations in sustainable architecture, engineering, and green technologies. A key session featured a panel discussion on building strong industry-academia partnerships in India. The panel focused on aligning university curricula with the green economy to better prepare students for careers in sustainability.

The event also aimed to foster deeper collaboration between higher education institutions in India and the UK, with a specific focus on sustainable development and green jobs. It provided participants with valuable opportunities to network, share best practices, and discuss strategies for overcoming challenges in sustainability education. The event concluded with a networking lunch, offering attendees a chance to explore potential future collaborations. Supporting UEL's broader goal of integrating sustainability across all aspects of university life, by partnering with Siemens and T-Hub, it is not only preparing students for leadership roles in sustainability but also bridging the gap between academia and industry.

The University is deeply committed to strengthening its relationship with India. To that end, the university aims to enhance collaborations in India through academic research, knowledge exchange, and industry partnerships. By applying its pioneering research, it seeks to benefit global communities. Furthermore, the graduates, equipped with cutting-edge skills and entrepreneurial spirit, can play a significant role in accelerating India’s economic growth, thanks to the university's strong industry connections. The collaboration with Siemens is central to the university’s sustainability transformation, as the university works toward its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. In addition to the in-person sessions, Faye Bowser, Vice President of Siemens' Higher Education Vertical, delivered a virtual presentation. She shared insights into Siemens’ global efforts to promote sustainability through partnerships with higher education institutions. Meetu Chawla from Siemens India also provided an overview of Siemens’ partnerships with Indian universities, highlighting their pivotal role in driving sustainability initiatives across the region.

In conclusion, the partnership between the University of East London, Siemens UK, and T-Hub Hyderabad is helping drive sustainability in education. UEL is working towards a net-zero carbon campus by 2030 and providing students with the skills to lead in the green economy.
