Dr. Karen Johnson Explores Career Optimism in Latest White Paper

The university has released a white paper titled “The Resilience Factor: American Workforce's Adaptation to Ongoing Challenges,” authored by Karen Johnson, Ed.D., senior fellow in the Center for Educational and Instructional Technology Research (CEITR) and faculty member at the College of Doctoral Studies. Johnson has guided over 100 students through the dissertation process and reviews for the Dissertation to Publication workshop. She holds a doctorate in Higher Education from Texas Tech University, a Master of Arts in Secondary Education, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas. Johnson has been a faculty member at the University of Phoenix since 2005.

Drawing from the 2024 University of Phoenix Career Optimism Index study, Johnson explores trends in resilience, analyzing the impact of resource loss and gain on well-being, career satisfaction, and engagement. Johnson noted that workers continue to experience work-related anxiety and seek mental health resources. She emphasized that understanding the link between mental health, career optimism, and resilience can help organizations foster employee well-being while boosting innovation and productivity.

The white paper discusses how employers and employees can build resilience by developing new resources, offering examples of both employer-led and self-initiated practices. It also highlights the role of upskilling in enhancing resilience, noting that investing in education and skills acquisition not only increases job security but also boosts self-efficacy. Through initiatives like The Resilience Factor white paper, the university demonstrates its commitment to fostering resilience, well-being, and professional growth in both individuals and organizations.
