Exploring the Future of Nuclear Careers: UNR Hosts Successful Career Spotlight Event

UNR’s Nuclear Career Spotlight Draws Strong Interest from Students and Experts

The University of Nevada, Reno hosted its inaugural Nuclear Career Spotlight event from November 20 to 22, attracting over 90 students. The event, included seminars, panels, and booth and poster sessions, and introduced attendees to career opportunities in the nuclear industry, highlighting current developments in the sector.
Professor Miles Greiner, head of the College of Engineering's Nuclear Packaging Laboratory, emphasized that the event was organised to inform both STEM and non-STEM majors about the promises, challenges, and opportunities in the nuclear field. He expressed satisfaction with the strong student interest in the sector.

Co-organizer and Mechanical Engineering Research Associate Professor Mustafa Hadj-Nacer highlighted the event’s role in showcasing nuclear-related research at the university. Ethan Anderson, a senior in Materials Science & Engineering and president of the American Nuclear Society club, noted the event’s importance in demonstrating the broad range of career opportunities in the nuclear industry.

Presenters from five Department of Energy national labs, the Nevada National Security Site, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Kairos Power, and the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate Program shared their expertise. University alumni also participated, discussing their career paths in industry, government, and military roles. Faculty members described their research and graduate opportunities. Feedback from visitors, faculty, and students was overwhelmingly positive. Paul Guss, a senior distinguished member of the technical staff at the Nevada National Security Site, praised the event’s organization and expressed interest in future collaborations with University of Nevada, Reno students.
