UVM and BioLabs Announce State-of-the-Art Incubator for Startups, Opening 2025.

New BioLabs-UVM Partnership to Boost Scientific Discovery and Economic Growth

The University of Vermont (UVM), has announced a new partnership with Cambridge, Massachusetts-based BioInnovation Labs (BioLabs), a well-known innovation lab platform. As a result of this agreement, a specialized incubator will be established at UVM's Colchester location. The news was released in connection with the late-September Dean's Celebration of Excellence in Research. This is a great opportunity for life-science researchers, entrepreneurs, and startup companies as the BioLabs Innovation Center at UVM will provide fully equipped combination office and lab space to test and scale their research development.

As part of this strategic relationship, UVM will oversee the new center and supply necessary tools and technology, as well as the chance for direct faculty engagement from UVM's Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine. Within the UVM Health Network, the college has about 700 clinical faculty members and nearly 200 research faculty members. In addition to managing facility operations, BioLabs will help by setting up networking and programming events and providing access to industry partners.

Biolabs has partnerships with leading universities and pharmaceutical firms worldwide, now UVM will become the first rural university to join the force and this partnership reinforces the university’s commitment to research, education, and innovation. UVM's new BioLabs Innovation Center will provide almost 7,000 square feet of shared lab and office space with access to the core facilities of Robert Larner M.D. College of Medicine and UVM, local transit through Green Mountain and The Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport, and other amenities for 10–20 early-stage enterprises. Applications and tours will be available in the upcoming months, even though it will formally open in early 2025.

From September 23–27, 2024, Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine will host its Dean’s Celebration of Excellence in Research. This event will celebrate academic research and discovery while honoring the accomplishments of faculty, postdoctoral trainees, and graduate students. Kirk Dombrowski, Ph.D., Vice President for Research and Economic Development at UVM, noted that the BioLabs Innovation Center would be highly competitive and beneficial for job creation and regional economic growth, as startups gain access to UVM’s extensive research resources.

Richard L. Page, M.D., Dean of the Larner College of Medicine, expressed excitement about the partnership, which will provide vital incubator space and support for advancing scientific discoveries and patient care while Johannes Fruehauf, M.D., Ph.D., founder and CEO of BioLabs, highlighted the opportunity to enhance access to state-of-the-art facilities, promoting collaboration and leveraging UVM's extensive resources for scientists and entrepreneurs.
