Dec 02, 2024 |
Former UK Conservative Party leader William Hague has been appointed as the 160th chancellor of Oxford University, one of the world’s oldest and most renowned institutions. On November 27, he secured the position through an online selection process involving staff and alumni. In the election, Hague defeated several prominent candidates, including Chris Patten, the last British governor of Hong Kong, who has held the position since 2003, as well as Peter Mandelson, a former Labour Cabinet minister, and Elish Angiolini, the former top law officer of Scotland. His inauguration is scheduled for early next year.
Hague will serve a 10-year term and expressed his deep honor in accepting the role. A 1982 Magdalen College, Oxford graduate, he began his political career with the Oxford University Conservative Association. At 36, he became the leader of the Conservative Party after their defeat to Labour in 1997, stepping down following another loss in 2001. In defining his new role, Hague emphasized that the next decade at Oxford would be crucial for the UK's success. He expressed his eagerness to collaborate with the vice-chancellor, her team, students, and alumni to further the university's achievements.
The chancellor, a position dating back to the 13th century, is the ceremonial head of the university, overseeing major events and playing a key role in appointing the vice-chancellor, who manages the university's daily operations. The university explained that the chancellor also carries out advocacy, advisory, and fundraising duties, representing Oxford at various local, national, and international events. Additionally, the chancellor chairs the committee responsible for selecting the vice-chancellor. Hague’s appointment marks a return to his academic roots as he assumes this historic role at the prestigious 800-year-old institution.
William Hague's extensive political experience and deep connection to Oxford will shape the university’s future by navigating the challenges and opportunities and reinforcing its position as a global academic leader.
