With a strong focus on innovation and strategic contributions to Australia’s space and defence sectors, it has been invited to join the esteemed Group of Eight.
The creation of the university was a flagship initiative stemming from a 2022 Labour election promise, which the South Australian Government has hailed as a major success for the state. Officials have stated that the institution aims to become Australia’s largest domestic student educator, lead in graduate employment outcomes, rank among the top five Australian universities for student experience, and consistently place within the top one per cent of universities worldwide.
To support its establishment, the South Australian Government has pledged $464.5 million, including investments in research, student support, and land acquisition. Furthermore, by 2034, Adelaide University is expected to contribute an additional $500 million annually to the state’s economy, serve more than 70,000 students, and create approximately 1,200 new jobs. A key milestone in the university’s development is the appointment of its new leader. Officials have confirmed that the Adelaide University Transition Council conducted an extensive international recruitment process to secure the appointment. This leadership transition represents a crucial step in shaping the institution’s future direction.
Professor Nicola Phillips, currently serving as both Acting and Interim Vice-Chancellor at the University of Melbourne, will formally assume her role on 12 January 2026. In the interim, founding co-Vice Chancellors, Professors Peter Høj AC and David Lloyd, will continue overseeing the two foundation universities before handing over responsibilities to Professor Phillips. The Malinauskas Government has welcomed Professor Phillips’ appointment as Vice-Chancellor and President of Adelaide University, describing it as a pivotal development in establishing a world-class tertiary institution in South Australia. Officials have emphasised that the university is expected to drive advancements in education, research, and innovation, contributing to economic growth and broader societal prosperity. Additionally, the government has pledged its support to Professor Phillips in her efforts to create a globally leading university that delivers significant value to students, staff, and the wider community.
Acknowledging the contributions of founding co-Vice Chancellors, Professors Peter Høj AC and David Lloyd, government representatives have expressed appreciation for their leadership and ongoing role in facilitating a smooth transition to Professor Phillips.
