Brooklyn College Celebrates Inclusion in New Research Colleges and Universities Category

ACE and Carnegie Foundation Honor Brooklyn College for Advancing Research

Brooklyn College has achieved a remarkable milestone by being officially recognised as a leading research institution by the Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education (ACE). This distinguished acknowledgement comes with the college's inclusion in the newly established Research Colleges and Universities (RCU) category. Despite not offering doctoral programs, Brooklyn College's significant contributions to advancing research have earned it this esteemed recognition, highlighting its commitment to excellence in academia and its role in fostering innovative research.

The new classification recognises institutions that invest at least $2.5 million annually in research, even if they do not offer doctoral degrees. Brooklyn College’s inclusion, alongside other CUNY colleges, underscores its vital role in producing innovative research across its five schools. President Michelle J. Anderson stated that Brooklyn College’s recognition as a leading research institution reflects the dedication and innovation of its faculty and students. She emphasised the college's pride in being part of this new category, which acknowledges the impact of its research.

Additionally, she noted that Brooklyn College’s research not only strengthens the academic community but addresses real-world challenges. The college’s research spans various fields, with faculty leading their disciplines, fostering discoveries, promoting student involvement, and encouraging local and global collaboration. In April 2025, the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation are set to release their 2025 Institutional Classification. This classification will categorise higher education institutions based on various factors, such as the types of degrees they offer, the fields of study they emphasise, and the size of the institution. Brooklyn College's recognition in the RCU category highlights its significant contributions to research and its dedication to academic excellence.

The new Research Colleges and Universities (RCU) category acknowledges institutions like Brooklyn College, which are making important contributions to advancing knowledge and solving real-world problems. By encouraging discovery, student involvement, and collaboration, Brooklyn College sets a high standard for research and education. This recognition shows that innovation and academic excellence are not limited to institutions with doctoral programs. It encourages other colleges and universities to invest in research, support talent, and strive for excellence, no matter their size or degree offerings.
