IIT Delhi’s Annual Placement Season Marks Significant Growth in PhD Scholar Placements

IIT Delhi Adapts to Changing Job Market, Sees Surge in Placement Participation

While high salary packages and placement offers often attract students worldwide, IIT Delhi has announced that it will no longer include them in its placement announcements. An exit survey of last year's graduates revealed that 95% had secured suitable job opportunities, with only 5% still seeking positions, many of whom were PhD scholars pursuing post-doctoral research abroad. This reflects the effectiveness of IIT Delhi’s efforts in fostering student progress, research, and innovation, contributing to its prominent position in the QS rankings.

The annual campus placement interviews at IITs began on December 1. The number of students participating in on-campus placements for the 2023-24 session surged by 25% compared to the previous year, with a six-fold increase in the number of PhD scholars. The total number of graduates in 2023-24 was nearly 10% higher than the previous year, and the number of PhD graduates rose by 30%. IIT Delhi also conducted a special placement drive for PhD scholars in June 2024, resulting in a seven-fold increase in offers compared to the previous year. Despite this success, many graduates were placed through off-campus opportunities, as they were recruited for specialized roles. During the 2023-2024 placement season, the university received 1,222 job offers and 741 unique internship offers.

Prof. R. Ayothiraman and Prof. Naresh Datla, Professors in charge of the Office of Career Services (OCS), stated that all students enrolled for placement services in the 2024-25 session would find career opportunities aligned with their skills and expectations. They also highlighted that a diverse range of recruiters would visit the university in the coming weeks to meet the needs of aspiring students. Both professors expressed confidence that recruiters would recognize student’s talent, potential, and capabilities, leading to a successful placement season.
