IIT Madras Topped NIRF Rankings for the Sixth Consecutive Year in 'Overall' and 'Engineering' Categories

NIRF Rankings 2024: New Categories Highlight Growth in India's Higher Education Sector

The National Institutional Ranking Framework is an initiative of the Indian government to rank Higher Education Institutions that assesses and compares institutions based in India on a detailed set of characteristics and key performance indicators and provides a list of best-performing universities. On 12 August, the NIRF 2024 Rankings were released which showcased a significant expansion with 10,885 institutes participating, marking a 200% increase since 2016.

 

IIT Madras continued its dominance, securing the top position in both overall and Engineering categories for the sixth consecutive year. AIIMS Delhi retains its number-one spot in the Medical category for seven years, while IIM Ahmedabad leads the Management category for the fifth year in a row. In the NIRF Rankings 2024, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru remained at the top of the list of universities, as it did last year, with JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia closely following in second and third place, respectively. IISc Bangalore was named the second-best institution in the 'Overall' category.

 

The recent NIRF rankings included 3 new categories open universities, skill universities, and state-funded government universities in comparison to last year’s rankings which included Overall, Colleges, Universities, and Research institutes. Additionally, the Rankings' topic domains have been expanded to cover Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, Architecture and Planning, Dental, Agriculture, and Allied Sectors. This year's NIRF rankings underwent two significant changes: the faculty-to-student ratio for medical colleges was reduced from 1:15 to 1:10, while the ratio for state-funded government institutes was reduced from 1:20 to 1:15, and a goal of implementing Sustainability Ranking was proposed for the next year, reflecting the increased emphasis on carbon neutrality and sustainability.

 

In the NIRF Rankings 2024 for the “Overall” category, the top 10 institutes are led by IIT Madras in Chennai, followed by IISc Bengaluru, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur. The list continues with IIT Kharagpur, AIIMS New Delhi, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Guwahati, which are tied for eighth place. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) rounds out the top ten. In the ranking of “Top 5 Universities of India”, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru secured first position, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), also in New Delhi secured second and third position respectively. The fourth position goes to the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in Manipal, while Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi is ranked fifth. NIRF Rankings 2024 for “Top Engineering Institutes”, the top ten are led by IIT Madras in Chennai, followed by IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kanpur. The fifth spot goes to IIT Kharagpur, with IIT Roorkee in sixth. IIT Guwahati ranks seventh, IIT Hyderabad is eighth, and the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli is ninth. Rounding out the top ten is IIT-BHU in Varanasi.
 

The “Top 10 Management Institutes”, under the NIRF 2024 Rankings are led by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, followed by the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, and the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode. IIT Delhi is ranked fourth, with the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta in fifth. The sixth spot goes to the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai, while the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow is seventh. Indian Institute of Management Indore ranks eighth, XLRI - Xavier School of Management is ninth, and IIT Bombay completes the top ten. In the NIRF Rankings 2024 for “Pharmacy Institutes”, the top ten are led by Jamia Hamdard in New Delhi, followed by the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) Hyderabad. The third position is held by Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani. JSS College of Pharmacy in Ooty ranks fourth, with the Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai fifth. JSS College of Pharmacy in Mysuru is sixth, and NIPER Mohali is seventh. Panjab University in Chandigarh comes in eighth, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences is ninth, and SVKM's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) in Mumbai completes the top ten.

 

Looking at the Top 10 colleges of India’s NIRF rankings, the top positions are held by Hindu College in New Delhi, followed by Miranda House and St. Stephen's College, both in New Delhi. Rama Krishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College in Kolkata shares the third spot. Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College in New Delhi is ranked fifth, with St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata sixth. PSGR Krishnammal College for Women in Coimbatore is seventh, and Loyola College in Chennai is eighth. Kirori Mal College in New Delhi ranks ninth, and Lady Shri Ram College for Women, also in New Delhi, completes the top ten.

 

NIRF Rankings 2024 for “Medical Colleges”, the top five are led by undoubtedly All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. The second position is held by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, followed by Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore. The fourth spot goes to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru, and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi ranks fifth. Exploring the NIRF rankings for “Research Institutions” the top five are led by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru. The second position is held by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, followed by IIT Delhi in third. IIT Bombay is ranked fourth, and IIT Kharagpur completes the top five.
 

The Top 10 “Innovation Institutes of India” list, is led by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, followed by IIT Madras. The third position is held by IIT Hyderabad, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru in fourth place. IIT Kanpur ranks fifth, and IIT Roorkee is sixth. IIT Delhi is seventh, and IIT Mandi is eighth. IIT Kharagpur comes in ninth, and Anna University in Chennai rounds out the top ten.
In the NIRF Rankings 2024 for “Law Colleges”, the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru tops the list, leading the top five institutions. The second position is held by the National Law University (NLU) in New Delhi, followed by the Nalsar University of Law in Hyderabad. The fourth spot goes to The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in Kolkata, and Symbiosis Law School in Pune ranks fifth.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee leads the top five “Architecture Institutes” in the NIRF Rankings 2024. The second position is held by IIT Kharagpur, followed by the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut. The fourth spot goes to the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology in Shibpur, and the fifth position is held by the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi The Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences in Chennai tops the list of “Dental Institutes” in the NIRF Rankings 2024. The second position is held by Manipal College of Dental Sciences in Udupi, followed by Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences in New Delhi. King George's Medical University in Lucknow ranks fourth, and Dr. DY Patil Vidyapeeth in Pune is fifth.
 

In the NIRF Rankings 2024 for “Agriculture and Allied” institutes, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi leads the top five. It is followed by ICAR - National Dairy Research Institute in Karnal in second place. Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana secures the third spot, with Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi coming in fourth. The fifth position is held by the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Izatnagar. Leading the top three “Open Universities” in the NIRF Rankings 2024 is the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in New Delhi. It is followed by Netaji Subhas Open University in Kolkata in second place, and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University in Ahmedabad ranks third.
 

At the forefront of the top three “Skill Universities” in the NIRF Rankings 2024 is Symbiosis Skills and Professional University in Pune. It is followed by Shri Vishwakarma Skill University in Palwal in second place, with Bharatiya Skill Development University in Jaipur securing the third spot. Among the top ten “State Public Universities” in the NIRF Rankings 2024, Anna University in Chennai is ranked highest. It is followed by Jadavpur University in Kolkata in second place, with Savitribai Phule Pune University securing third. The University of Calcutta, also in Kolkata, holds the fourth position, while Panjab University in Chandigarh is fifth. Osmania University in Hyderabad is sixth, and Andhra University in Visakhapatnam is seventh. Bharathiar University in Coimbatore comes in eighth, the University of Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram is ninth, and Cochin University of Science and Technology in Kochi rounds out the top ten.
