The University of Warwick, located in Coventry, England, is a public research university founded in 1965. It excels in research, teaching, and innovation, and offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across its three faculties: Arts, Science, Engineering and Medicine, and Social Sciences. It is also home to Warwick Business School, Warwick Law School, and Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG). Recently, the university has appointed Namibian diplomat, lawyer, and social justice advocate Bience Gawanas as its new Chancellor, effective January 23, 2025.
The new Chancellor of the University of Warwick, widely recognized for her distinguished career with governments such as the United Nations, Namibia, and the African Union, will serve as the ceremonial head, presiding over key events like graduation ceremonies and representing the university’s principles of academic diversity, excellence, and social impact. With over 40 years of work in human rights and law, she was awarded an honorary degree by the university in 2023. She succeeds Baroness Catherine Ashton, who held the position since 2016.
Commenting on her new role, Bience shared that when she arrived at Warwick as a student in 1982, she never imagined becoming Chancellor. She expressed that being an alumna is both an honour and a responsibility and hoped her role would inspire young women, especially Black women, to see opportunities regardless of their circumstances. She stated that she would use her position to listen, learn, and identify areas for improvement, aiming to be seen as a relatable, human Chancellor.
Professor Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick, praised Bience Gawanas for her extensive international experience and commitment to education and global development. He noted her leadership in promoting equality, which aligns with Warwick’s mission to inspire future leaders and highlighted her career as a Warwick alumna as making her the ideal choice. Professor Croft expressed excitement about welcoming her to the Warwick community.
